Women's Volleyball Falls to San Diego in Tournament Finale

HONOLULU — The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team was swept by San Diego, 25-21, 25-17, 25-16 on Sunday in the finale of the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic at Bankoh Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.

For the second straight night, UH freshman Cha'lei Reid led the Rainbow Wahine (0-3) in kills, putting down a team-high nine for the match. Junior Stella Adeyemi added six kills while sophomore setter Adrianna Arquette recorded her first career double-double with 17 assists and 11 digs to go with a kill and a service ace. At the net, Reid and Bri Gunderson both were in on three blocks each to lead the 'Bows.

San Diego (3-0) claimed the tournament title after sweeping through the weekend. Isabel Clark led the Toreros with 14 kills in Sunday's match and tournament MVP Nemo Beach finished with 12 kills.

Reid, who represented the 'Bows on the All-Tournament team, dealt back-to-back aces in an early four-point UH surge in the opening set, but San Diego answered to erase a five-point deficit and went on a 7-0 run to open up an 18-13 lead. Tyla Reese Mane provided a spark off the bench with two kills and later served up an ace that brought the 'Bows to within 21-20. USD reeled off the next three points and closed out the set on its second opportunity.

The second set was tight midway through before San Diego broke away with a 6-0 run to take command at 23-16. The surge included two aces and a block and the Toreros closed out the set with their third ace of the set and sixth of the match.

San Diego raced out to a 15-8 lead in the third set and remained in control through the end of set to seal the sweep. Clark and Beach combined for nine kills on 11 attempts and between them and each had an ace.

USD setter Kylie Munday issued a match-high 26 assists and BayLea Sparks was in on a match-high six blocks. USD hit .271 to UH's .049 and had eight aces and nine blocks.

The Rainbow Wahine next play host to the OUTRIGGER Invitational. The tournament starts on Wednesday with a matchup between San Jose State and Utah Valley. UH opens the tournament on Thursday against San Jose State at 7 p.m.
