GAME STORYLINES
- UH opens the season against power conference opponents in consecutive weeks for the second time in the last three seasons and seventh time since 2011. The last time Hawai'i swept both games was in 2019 (Arizona & Oregon State).
- Since 2003, UH has 13 wins over Power Conference teams, 12 of which occurred at home. The lone road win was at Washington State in 2009, which was played in Seattle.
- The game marks UH's second-ever against a Big 12 opponent having previously played Colorado in 2010 (L, 13-31 in Boulder, Colo.). Hawai'i has played several other current Big 12 teams prior to their Big 12 membership (Arizona State, BYU, Central Florida, Cincinnati, Houston, and Utah).
- Hawai'i's last match-up and victory over a current Big 12 team was against Houston in the 2020 New Mexico Bowl in Frisco, Texas, when Houston was a member of the American Athletic Conference. UH won 28-14, which marked the Warriors' last bowl victory.
- Arizona leads the series, 5-1, including a 2-0 mark in Tucson, Ariz. The teams last met in Tucson in 2016, with the Wildcats winning 47-28. The schools also met in Tucson in 1952 (ARIZ, 57-7).
- UH won the last meeting between the teams, 45-38 in Honolulu to open the 2019 season.
- Head coach Timmy Chang now has a 1-6 record against Autonomous Four conference teams after last week's season-opening win over Stanford.
- Arizona head coach Brent Brennan was a UH graduate assistant in 1998. He is a first cousin of former UH record-setting quarterback Colt Brennan.
- The teams are scheduled to meet again in 2029 (Aug. 25) in Honolulu, which is projected to be the first game in the New Aloha Stadium.
- Legendary head coach Dick Tomey coached at both Hawai'i and Arizona and at the time he left both institutions, he was each school's winningest coach in the Division I era — 63 at UH and 95 at UA. Tomey coached Hawai'i for 10 seasons (1977-86) before heading to Arizona for 14 seasons (1987-2000), the latter of which he led to seven bowl appearances.
- QB Micah Alejado has won his last 26 starts dating back to his junior year at Bishop Gorman High School. Aug. 30 will make it 1,100 days since his last loss (Aug. 26, 2022) as a starter.
