MALIBU, Calif. – Trailing by a pair of goals at the half, the Hawai'i women's soccer team put together a late rally to secure a 2-2 draw on the road against Pepperdine Sunday.
Behind 2-0 heading into the final 20 minutes of the match, the Rainbow Wahine scored a pair of goals off corner kicks to secure the result to close out the road trip.
Cate Sheahan put UH on the board with a header right in front of the goal off a
Leila Kahoano corner kick at the 70:36 mark to cut the deficit in half at 2-1. Seven minutes later,
Amber Gilbert delivered the equalizer on another corner kick, cashing in on a wide open shot from the top of the box off
Alice Davidson's feed to make it 2-2 in the 78th minute.
Sheahan nearly gave UH the lead in the 81st minute, having her fifth shot on goal of the match saved to create another corner kick opportunity. The 'Bows couldn't cash in on that chance however, and Hawai'i keeper
Kennedy Justin made a leaping save in the final minute of the match to secure the draw.
Pepperdine got the scoring started early, taking a 2-0 lead in the first 20 minutes of the match. Megan Edelman made it 1-0 in the 15th minute before Tatum Wynalda cashed in off a UH turnover deep on its side of the field to double the lead at the 18:03 mark.
The Rainbow Wahine came out of halftime on the attack, attempting six shots – five of them on goal – before Sheahan and Gilbert were able to break through.
Gilbert's goal was the 13th of her career, putting her just two shy of cracking the program's career top 10 list while Sheahan found the back of the net for the eighth time in her career and now has 25 career points. Kahoano's assist gives her a team-leading three points through her first two matches in a Rainbow Wahine uniform.
The Rainbow Wahine open their home schedule with the OUTRIGGER Soccer Kickoff starting with the home opener against Central Arkansas Thursday at 7 p.m. at Waipi'o Soccer Stadium.
