Rainbow Warriors Dig Deep to Win Opener at Fullerton

FULLERTON, Calif. – The Hawai'i baseball team jumped out to a big early lead and hung on late to open a key series at Cal State Fullerton with an 8-7 win Friday night.

The Rainbow Warriors used an offensive onslaught from the second through fourth innings that consisted of seven doubles and a homer to open up a lead. The 'Bows then held off a furious late rally by the Titans to earn their 30th win of the season, marking the first time since 2011-12 that UH has won 30-plus games in back-to-back years.

After falling behind 2-0 after one, the Rainbow Warriors came back swinging by scoring the next eight runs in the game to open up a lead.

UH got the offense rolling in the second inning with five doubles in the frame to score five runs. Itsuki Takemoto started the rally with a one-out double before coming around to score on Jared Quandt's two-bagger.

In his first at-bat back from injury, Elijah Ickes traded places with Quandt to tie it up and after a walk, Konnor Palmeira gave Hawai'i a 4-2 lead with a two-run double. Matthew Miura delivered the fifth double of the frame – a program record for an inning – and Shunsuke Sakaino plated another one batter later with an RBI groundout to cap off the big inning.

Ickes came through again in the third inning with a two-run double to make it 7-2, and Miura smacked a lead off homer on a 3-2 pitch off the scoreboard to stretch the lead to 8-2 in the fifth.

Fullerton would then begin to chip away, scoring single runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings to cut the UH lead to three. The Titans continued their comeback in the ninth, scoring two runs on an inside-the-park homer to cut the Hawai'i lead to one, but Isaiah Magdaleno finished things off with a strikeout to strand the tying run at third base.

Quandt led the way offensively with a perfect 4-for-4 day with a career-high three doubles while Ickes finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two doubles in his return after missing the previous 25 games with an injury. UH's eight doubles fell just one shy of the program record of nine that was set in 1997.

The 'Bows and Titans play game two of the series on Saturday at 2 p.m. HT.
