HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team (29-18, 15-10 Big West) fell in their opener against UC San Diego, 4-0 on Friday night at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
The Tritons (15-28, 13-12 BW) struck first. Leadoff batter Morgan Eng led off the game with a looping single to right. She stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. She scored on a foul fly out by Haley Garcia.
UCSD led off the second with back-to-back singles to start the inning, but UH go the lead runner out on a fielder's choice to third, a pop out to first and a foul flyout to the catcher thwarted the Triton rally.
In the bottom of the third,
Carys Murakami led off with a single to left. Later with two outs,
Liliana Thomas tested the limits of the ballpark, with the leftfielder snaring the deep fly ball at the fence.
In the sixth, UCSD's Zara Wasserman hit two run home run to extend their lead to 3-0.
In the bottom of the sixth, UH loaded the bases with one out, but the Tritons escaped unscathed.
UHSD added another run in the seventh on an RBI single up the middle by Garcia to lead 4-0.
Hawai'i was able to scratch a run across in the seventh on an RBI-single by

UH starter
Macy Brandl fell to 15-7 overall, giving up three runs on four hits with not outs and two strikeouts in 5.1 innings. Reliever Millie Fidge allowed one run on two hits in the final 1.2 innings.
The Tritons' India Caldwell earned the complete-game win to improve to 10-13 overall. She allowed one run on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
Friday was
Bob Coolen Night as the longtime UH head coach is retiring at the end of the 2025 season after 34 years. Close to 50 Rainbow Wahine alumnae returned to Manoa to help celebrate Coach Bob's career as former Senator Brian Taniguchi and acting athletics director
Lois Manin participated in the post-game celebration.
The Rainbow Wahine will face the Tritons in a doubleheader on Saturday, May 3 starting at 2:00 p.m. HT at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
