Women’s Golf Ready For Big West Championship

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i women's golf team will participate in the Big West Championship this week in Las Vegas, Nev. The three-day tournament runs Sunday, April 13 through Tuesday, April 15 and for the third consecutive year, will be held at the Spanish Trail Country Club.

The Rainbow Wahine enter the championship as the No. 7 seed and will be paired in the first round with CSUN and Cal State Bakersfield. UH's tee times are scheduled for 10:10 a.m. PT to 10:50 a.m. PT.

The championship's defending champion is Long Beach State, who secured a wire-to-wire team win last year, besting three-time defending champion Cal Poly by 23 strokes for the largest margin of victory since 2015. LBSU's Jasmine Leovao captured medalist honors becoming just the sixth individual repeat champion in Championship history.

UC Davis is the highest ranked team in the field at No. 59 followed by Long Beach State (#70), UC Irvine (#83), Cal State Fullerton (#85), Cal Poly (#90), UC Riverside (#121), UH (#145), CSUN (#149), and Cal State Bakersfield (#213).

The winner of the Championship will receive the Big West's automatic bid into the NCAA regional field. If the individual champion is not from the winning team, they will also earn an entry into a regional.

Spanish Trail Country Club, a 27-hole championship course designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., will play at 6,315 yards and par 72. Tee times begin off No. 1 at 8:30 a.m. PT on Sunday and Monday. Tuesday's final round will have split tees at No. 1 and No. 10 beginning at 8:00 a.m. PT.

UH was co-champion of the event in 2022, securing its first women's golf conference championship in program history. Prior to that, the program's best finish at the championship was runner-up in 2015.

Hawai'i will send a contingent of six golfers – Varnika S. Achanta, Maline Kraus, Kellie Yamane, Emiko Sverduk, Sofina Firouzi, and Wendy Song, the latter of whom will serve as alternate. Kraus leads the team with a 74.29 scoring average followed by Sverduk (75.35). The Düsseldorf, Germany native was the team's top finisher in four events this season while Sverduk and Achanta led in two tournaments each.

Last season, UH finished seventh in the Big West Championship with a 928 total. Yamane was the team's top finisher, tying for 16th place with a 228 total. Sverduk and Song tied for 22nd at 233.
