BeachBows Fall To No. 2 UCLA In Best In West Tournament

LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. -- The No. 17 University of Hawaii beach volleyball team continued play at the Best in the West tournament with a 5-0 loss to UCLA Saturday in Laguna Beach.

After splitting a pair of matches on the opening day Friday, the BeachBows (11-14) were turned back by the Bruins (24-3) who completed its second sweep of UH this season. UCLA also defeated UH during the season-opening Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic.

The Bows were competitive at the top two flights, putting the Bruins in a hole in the opening set. But UCLA battled back to win in three on both courts to complete the shutout. Maggie Boyd and Sally Perez outlasted Amirah Ali and Alana Embry 15-21, 21-14, 16-14 while Peri Brennan and Natalie Myszkowski rallied past Caprice Lorenzo/Sarah Burton (UH) 16-21, 21-17, 15-9.

The Bruins won in straight sets on the other three courts to defeat the Rainbow Wahine for the 15th straight time.

UH concludes the Best in the West tournament tomorrow with matches versus Cal Poly (11 am PT/8 am HT) and North Florida (1 pm PT/10 am HT).
