BeachBows Drop Pair Of Matches On Senior Night

HONOLULU — In its final two home matches of the season, the No. 16 University of Hawai'i beach volleyball team dropped a pair of matches on Sunday at the Clarence T.C. Ching Complex. The Rainbow Wahine lost to No. 10 Cal, 5-0, before dropping a 4-1 match to Grand Canyon.

Following the matches, Amirah Ali, Alana Embry, Kendall Kaelin, Cami Loker  were honored during Senior Night festivities.

In the first match of the day, UH (12-19) took on Cal in a rematch of Saturday's contest that went down to the wire. But this time around Cal asserted its superiority, winning four of five courts in straight sets. UH looked to salvage a point at the No. 2 court but couldn't seal the deal as Cal's Mila Vugrincic and Maile Somera defeated Sarah Burton and Caprice Lorenzo 21-19, 13-21, 15-9 in a three-setter as the Golden Bears (22-6) swept the 'Bows for the first time in 10 all-time matches.

In the night cap, UH lost a heartbreaker to Grand Canyon in which the BeachBows let three points slip away. Sydney Amiatu and Kristen Serrano put UH on the board first with their second win of the weekend as they took down Madi Bolge and Regan Holmer 21-18, 21-19. But the Antelopes (19-8) snatched the next three courts in comeback fashion, falling behind by a set at flights 2, 3 and 4, before rallying for three-set victories on each of those.

The clinching point at the No. 2 flight proved the most dramatic as Katie Keefe and Rhea Kohl outlasted Burton and Lorenzo, 15-21, 23-21, 19-17. WIth the outcome already in hand GCU took the final court, again in three sets, as Ines Piret and Adrianna Ferro took down Ali and Embry as the top of the order.

The Rainbow Wahine will have a bye this coming weekend before heading off to Santa Monica for the 2025 Big West Championship, April 24-25. The winner of that tournament earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship in early May.
