BeachBows Fall To No. 10 Cal, No. 13 GCU In Return Home

HONOLULU — The No. 16 University of Hawai'i beach volleyball team kicked off its final homestand of the season with a pair of losses Saturday at the Clarence T.C. Ching Complex.  In their first home matches in more than a month, the Rainbow Wahine (12-17) were edged by No. 10 Cal, 3-2, before falling to No. 13 Grand Canyon. 4-1.

The losses ended UH's string of 10 straight wins at Ching Complex, dating back to 2022.

UH's first match versus Cal was a thriller that went down to the wire. The teams split the first four courts, including a pair of thrilling three set wins by the BeachBows. The No. 5 pair of Sydney Amiatu and Kristen Serrano picked up their first win as a pair together with a 23-21, 19-21, 15-9 decision over Marilu Pally and Jenna Colligan to get UH on the board. Meanwhile, the No. 3 duo of Jesse Mann and Jasmine Wandeler pulled off a dramatic comeback, overcoming a 13-10 deficit in the third set to defeat Christina DeRoos and Ella Driebolz, 23-21, 18-21, 19-17 to lock the dual match up, 2-2.

It all came down to the top of the order where Alana Embry and Amirah Ali took on Cal's  Emma Donley and Portia Sherman. It was a competitive pair of sets, but the duo of Donley and Sherman ultimately held off Ali and Embry, 21-19, 21-18 to clinch the dual for the Golden Bears.

In the backend of the double header, GCU moved past UH for just its third win in 13 tries against UH. Despite the score the Rainbow Wahine pushed the Antelopes (18-6) with the swing scores coming at courts No. 2 and 4 where GCU edged UH in three sets.  Ali and Embry bounced back from their close loss earlier in the day to defeat Ines Piret and Adriana Serrano Ferro in straight sets 21-15, 21-19, for UH's lone point of the dual.

The Rainbow Wahine will play their final two home matches of the season at Ching Courts on Sunday. UH will take on Cal at 3 p.m. before facing Grand Canyon in a rematch at 6:30 p.m. in a contest televised on Spectrum Sports. Following the match Ali, Embry, Kendall Kaelin and Cami Loker will be honored during Senior Night festivities.
