BeachBows Cap Heineken Queen’ Cup WIth Win Over Chaminade

HONOLULU — The No. 15 University of Hawai'i beach volleyball team concluded the Heineken Queen's Cup Friday with a 5-0 shutout of Chaminade  at Queen's Beach on Saturday morning. The BeachBows (5-7) finished with a 5-1 record overall in the tournament.

UH had little trouble with its crosstown rival winning all five courts in straight-set fashion. Alana Embry and Julia Lawrenz got UH on the board first with a 21-14, 21-8 win over Mahala Ka'apuni and Nanna Inoue. The top pair of No. 1 Sarah Burton and Caprice Lorenzo and the No. 3 duo of Jesse Mann and Jasmine Wandeler were also victorious in straight sets. All three of those UH pairs went a stellar 5-1 during the weekend, with Lawrenz gaining individual honors as the tournament's top blocker.

Freshman Ayva Moi paired with Sydney Miller at the No. 5 court where they picked up a dominant 21-9, 21-10 win over Brooklyn and Delaney Poling. Meanwhile, Kendall Kaelin made her season debut, teaming up with Sydney Amiatu at the No. 4 flight. Kaelin and Amiatu completed the sweep for the BeachBows in a furious set two finish. The duo trailed Tabby Allen and Kanoelehua Misipeka, 18-16, before reeling off a 5-1 run to close the set and the dual match for the BeachBows.

UH, Washington and Tulane all concluded the tournament with just one loss apiece, with the Huskies declared the Queen's Cup winner, based on combined dual match scores among the three teams.

The BeachBows now travel on the road for the first time this season when it competes in the East Meets West Invitational, March 14-15, in Manhattan Beach, Calif.
