Softball Drops Doubleheader to Long Beach State

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team (15-10, 1-2 Big West) dropped both ends of Saturday's doubleheader to Long Beach State (11-9, 2-1 BW) on Saturday afternoon. The Beach battled back to take the first game, 8-3 then pulled away to sweep the doubleheader, 9-1 in six innings at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Long Beach State 8, Hawai'i 3
Long Beach State jumped out to 2-0 lead to start the game. Jacquelyn Bickar led off the game with a solo home run to left. Later with the bases loaded, Terrones walks to drive in Makayla Medellin.

Hawai'i answered right back in the bottom of the first. Izabella Martinez led off the home half with a single to left. Two outs later, Jamie McGaughey blasted a two-run bomb over the leftfield fence to tie the score at 2-2. It marked McGaughey's team-leading sixth homer of the season.

Ellyanna Cinzori led off the second inning with a walk. Two outs later Kayara Tuiloma had a good at-bat that ended with her getting a single over the out-stretched shortstop  to drive in Cinzori to take a 3-2 lead.

The Beach's Bickar struck again, leading off the fifth inning with a single to left. Medellin followed with a two-run homer to left to leapfrog The Beach over the 'Bows to a 4-3 lead.

In the seventh, Long Beach State erupted for four runs to extend their lead to 8-3.

UH starter Macy Brandl threw six-plus innings. She allowed seven runs on eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Reliever Millie Fidge entered the game with the bases loaded and no outs in the seventh inning. She got the final three outs, giving up a run on two hits with a walk.

The Beach's starter Brynne Nally threw the first two plus innings. She allowed three runs on five hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Reliever Eryka Gonzales earned the win throwing five shutout innings with two walks and four strikeouts.

Long Beach State 9, Hawai'i 1
The Beach scored one run in the top of the first off an RBI double by Lee that drove in Drazo.

With runners at first and second in the second inning, LBSU's Carly Robbins hit a double to left to score Lina Apodaca from second. Selena Perez followed with a double to left-centerfield to score Robbins for the 3-0 lead.

Long Beach State tacked on two more runs on a two run home run by Perez in the fourth.

Hawai'i was able to post one run on two outs in the fifth. UH loaded the bases on an Alyssa Nakagawa single, an Izabella Martinez double and a Kennedy Thompson walk. Milan Ah Yat then drew a four-pitch walk to score pinch runner Maya Ichimura. But the 'Bows left the bases loaded as The Beach caught a fly out to left to stymie the rally.

The Beach then loaded the bases with two outs. A walk to Bicar scored Apodaca, then Medellin cleared the bases with a double to left that extened LBSU's lead to 9-1.

UH starter Addison Kostrencich took the loss, dropping her record to 8-5. She threw the first 1-2/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits with a strikeout. Fidge made her second relief appearance of the day, throwing the final 4-1/3 innings. She gave up six runs on five hits with three walks.

The Beach starter Kate Barnett earned the complete game win, giving up one run on four hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

The Rainbow Wahine will travel to California this week to take on CSUN in a three-game, Big West series. UH will open the series on Friday March 14 at 10:00 a.m. Ht. The two teams will then square off in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 15 beginning at 10:00 a.m. HT.
