BeachBows Take Two Of Three On Second Day Of Heineken Queen’s Cup

HONOLULU — The No. 15 University of Hawai'i beach volleyball team continued the Heineken Queen's Cup Friday with a trio of matches  at Queen's Beach. The BeachBows (4-7) defeated Saint Mary's, 4-1 and San Francisco, 5-0, while falling to No. 17 Washington, 4-1, in a tight battle between a pair of ranked foes.

In the first match of the day, UH took care of business against Saint Mary's. UH claimed the first three courts in straight sets to clinch the dual before dropping the final two courts in three-sets. The No. 1 duo of Sarah Burton and Caprice Lorenzo continued their hot streak with a 21-18, 21-19 win over Allie Cataldo and Hannah Couch. After falling behind 13-8 at technical timeout in set two, the UH duo reeled off 13 of the final 19 points to seal the dual match for the BeachBows. UH moved into a perfect 9-0 all-time against Saint Mary's with all but one of those wins coming in Honolulu.

The second match of the day was a barn burner as it paired the two nationally-ranked teams in the tournament head-to-head. UW jumped out to a 2-0 lead after straight set wins on courts 3 and 4. But UH responded on Court 2 with an emphatic 21-12, 21-18 win by Alana Embry and Julia Lawrenz over Katarina Pantovic and Lauren Wilcock.

With UH trailing 2-1, it came down to a pair of three-set matches on courts 1 and 5. It went down to the wire, but UW's top pair of  Teila Allen and Jade Sadeiko ultimately out-lasted  UH's Lorenzo and  Burton 23-21, 11-21, 15-13 to clinch the dual for the Huskies. Alina Urzua and Hannah Doyle followed suit moments later with a 16-14 set three win over Kristen Serrano and Sophie Buschmann to make for the final score. The loss was just UH's second in 11 all-time meetings with the Huskies and the first in six contests in Honolulu.

In the final match of the afternoon, UH and USF squared off for the second time in as many days with UH earning its first sweep of the season. UH won in straight sets on the top four courts, including another dominate performance by Embry and Lawrenz who rolled past Letizia Aquilino Rylie Reeves 21-11, 21-13. The No. 2 pair capped a flawless 3-0 day in which they did not drop a single set. The match also featured a successful debut of Tessa Marocco and Kasen Rosenthal who completed the UH shutout with a three-set victory over Francesca Stanschus and Michalina Rola at the No. 5 court.

The Heineken Queens Cup tourney concludes Saturday morning, with a trio of matchups including  the Rainbow Wahine taking on Chaminade at 9:45 a.m.
