IRVINE, Calif. – Outfielder
Kamana Nahaku earned Big West Player of the Week honors Monday following an incredible weekend at CSUN that saw him belt five home runs over the three-game series.
The senior homered in all three games against the Matadors, capped off by a school single-game record tying three bombs in Sunday's finale. Nahaku became just the sixth player in UH history to homer three times in a game and the first since Kolten Wong in 2009.
Nahaku delivered a go-ahead grand slam on an 0-2 pitch in the seventh inning of Saturday's series-tying win for his second long ball of the weekend. He then went yard three times in Sunday's dramatic 14-10 series-clinching win, hitting two solo homers in the fifth and seventh innings before capping off UH's 10-run ninth inning with a two-run shot.
He also homered in the series opener, hitting a two-run shot in the second inning to put UH on the board. Nahaku came into the series with just one homer, and now leads the team and is tied for the Big West lead in conference play with six taters on the season.
Nahaku is the only Big West player to hit three homers in a game this season and is the first Rainbow Warrior since 2015 (Kaeo Aliviado) to homer in three straight games.
Earlier in the week, Nahaku beat out a game-tying infield single with two outs in the ninth inning to help lead Hawai'i to a 9-8 win in extra innings over Hawai'i Hilo.
The Auburn, Wash. native is now hitting .348 on the season and is the second Hawai'i player to earn Big West position player of the week honors after
Shunsuke Sakaino earned the recognition following opening weekend. Three UH players have now earned a Big West weekly honor after
Cooper Walls was named pitcher of the week on Mar. 17.
