Balk Off Secures Series Sweep of UC Davis

HONOLULU – The Hawai'i baseball team finished off a series sweep of UC Davis with another dramatic walk-off win, claiming a 2-1 victory in 13 innings via a walk-off balk Monday night at Les Murakami Stadium.

With two outs and the bases loaded Jared Quandt broke for home on an 0-2 pitch that was fouled off by batter David Vergel de Dios, however, a balk was called allowing Quandt to score the winning run, giving UH its fifth walk-off win of the year.

The Rainbow Warriors improved to 17-5 on the year, marking their best start to a season since 1998 when they also won 17 of the first 22 games. UH also completed its second sweep of the season with their fifth consecutive win to improve to 16-3 at home on the year.

Isaiah Magdaleno delivered an incredible effort out the bullpen, shutting out the Aggies over the final seven innings while allowing just two hits to earn the win. Magdaleno, along with Ethan Thomas, Cory Ronan and Cooper Walls combined to strike out 11 batters while not allowing a walk as Hawai'i lowered its Big West-leading ERA to 3.01 on the season.

The Aggies jumped out to an early lead behind a Riley Acosta two-out RBI single to make it 1-0, where it would stay until the seventh inning.

The 'Bows finally broke through in the bottom of the seventh to tie it up at one. Jordan Donahue reached with a two-out single and stole second to bring up pinch-hitter Aidan Kuni. The junior took a 3-2 pitch back up the middle to score Donahue and knot things up at one, which is where it would stand until the game-winner in the 13th.

Matthew Miura led the way offensively throughout the series, reaching base in 14 of his 15 plate appearances on the weekend including his first 13 before being retired in the 10th inning.

The Rainbow Warriors will host Hawai'i Hilo Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m. at Les Murakami Stadium before hitting the road to take on CSUN Friday through Sunday.
