Baseball Walks Off Again to Beat Hilo

HONOLULU – The Hawai'i baseball team rallied late to win its sixth straight game with a 9-8 extra-innings victory over Hawai'i Hilo Tuesday at Les Murakami Stadium.

A day after winning on a walk-off balk, the Rainbow Warriors secured another dramatic win as Itsuki Takemoto worked a bases loaded walk with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning. The walk-off win is the Rainbow Warriors' sixth of the season.

Hawai'i was down to its final out in the bottom of the ninth with a runner on second and Kamana Nahaku at the plate. Nahaku chopped a ball to the first baseman and dove head first to beat out the flip, allowing pinch-runner Jarret Nielsen to score from second and tie it up at eight and force extras.

The Rainbow Warriors improved to 18-5 on the season, their best 23-game start to a season since 1992.

The 'Bows got on the board with a run in the first inning, but Hilo came storming back with four unanswered runs with single runs in the second and fourth around a two-run third to take a 4-1 lead.

UH came right back to tie it up with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Kevin Ferguson knocked in Aidan Kuni with a single up the middle before Draven Nushida singled in Ferguson to cut the deficit to one. Xaige Lancaster then hit a towering pop fly that was mishandled at first base, allowing Nahaku to score and tie it up at four.

Hunter Faildo gave Hawai'i the lead with an RBI single in the fifth and Jack Salmon came through with a run-scoring single in the sixth, making it 6-4 after six.

The two teams traded runs in the seventh, with Nushida delivering another run-scoring single to give UH a 7-5 lead.

The Vulcans reclaimed the lead with three runs in the in the top of the eighth to take an 8-7 lead. After a walk and an error to start the inning, an RBI single and fielder's choice knotted it up at seven with one out. Then with two outs in the inning, Vance Oshiro ripped a base hit through the left side to put Hilo in front before the UH comeback in the bottom of the ninth.

The Rainbow Warriors continue conference play on the road with a three-game series at CSUN beginning Friday at 2:30 p.m. HT.
