HONOLULU – Behind a combined shutout effort on the mound and a huge day offensively, the Hawai'i baseball team rolled to a 16-0 win over UC Davis to clinch the series win Sunday at Les Murakami Stadium.
The Rainbow Warriors secured their ninth consecutive home series victory and will look to go for the series sweep in the finale Monday night at 6:35 p.m. The win was also UH's 11th straight Sunday home victory, outscoring teams 96-25 over that stretch.
Liam O'Brien,
Sebastian Gonzalez and
Anthony Andrews combined on the pitching staff's second shutout of the season, scattering eight hits and holding the Aggies to 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position. Gonzalez earned his first career win, throwing 4.2 innings of five-hit ball with three strikeouts out of the bullpen. He relieved O'Brien who went the first 3.1 frames while Andrews closed things down with a scoreless ninth.
The Rainbow Warriors again drew first blood, scoring single runs in the second and third innings to go up 2-0.
Draven Nushida delivered an RBI single in the second to get the scoring started before
Ben Zeigler-Namoa dove in ahead of the tag on a ground ball to double the lead in the third.
UH opened up a lead in the fourth, scoring three runs to make it 5-0.
Jordan Donahue delivered both his first base hit and RBI of the season to plate the first run before a
Shunsuke Sakaino squeeze bunt made the lead 4-0. After a pitching change, Zeigler-Namoa delivered again this time with a sacrifice fly to cap off the three-run frame.
Hawai'i continued to pile on, scoring once more in the fifth, twice in the sixth and four times in the seventh to blow it wide open. Donahue delivered his second RBI single of the day to make it 6-0 in the fifth before
Itsuki Takemoto came through with a run-scoring base knock to highlight a two-run sixth.
Matthew Miura continued his perfect weekend at the plate with an RBI knock to start the scoring in the seventh while Zeigler-Namoa and Takemoto each secured multi-RBI efforts to help make it a four-run inning, extending the lead to 12-0.
UH scored four more times in the eighth, capped by
Kedren Kinzie's two-run double, to give the game its final score.
Miura has led the way offensively in the series, reaching base in all nine of his plate appearances on the weekend going 6-for-6 with three walks and four runs scored. Takemoto and Zeigler-Namoa have driven in five runs each in the series, with both turning in three-RBI games Sunday. Donahue recorded his first three hits of the season in his second game back after returning from injury, going 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs.
The 16-run win is the largest margin of victory for the 'Bows since a 16-0 win over San Diego State which came exactly a year ago on Mar. 23, 2024. UH scored in every inning except the first on the way to putting up 15 or more runs for the third time this year, all of which have come nine games.
Defensively UH turned four double plays, marking the most in a single game since turning four on Mar. 8, 2013 against Gonzaga. Zeigler-Namoa recorded two unassisted lineout double plays as the 'Bows did not commit an error for the second straight game.
The two teams close out their three-game series with a Monday night showdown. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. at Les Murakami Stadium. Reigning Big West Pitcher of the Week
Cooper Walls is scheduled to pitch against the Aggies' Bryan Green.
