Men’s Basketball Victorious Over UC Davis On Senior Night

HONOLULU  – The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team got back in the win column with a hard-earned 78-70 Senior Night win over UC Davis Saturday at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.

With the win the Rainbow Warriors (15-14, 7-11 Big West) snapped a three-game losing streak and picked up a big win in the race for a spot in the Big West Tournament. UH moved back into seventh in the Big West standings, a half game ahead of CSU Bakersfield.

Tanner Christensen led five Rainbow Warriors in double-digits, posting 16 points and adding a team-high nine rebounds. Akira Jacobs and Tom Beattie scored 12 points each, while Harry Rouhliadeff and Gytis Nemeikša had 10 apiece.

TY Johnson, the Big West's top scorer, scored a game-high 26 points, but was hounded into just 10-of-26 shooting for the Aggies (15-14, 9-9), who dropped their fourth straight contest.

UH led from wire-to-wire and held double-digit leads in both halves, but the Aggies stayed within striking distance down to the final minute. The 'Bows closed out the game with stellar defense and a flurry of free throws.

UH jumped out from the get-go, taking a 14-5 lead less than seven minutes in. After UC Davis briefly tied it, UH built a 10-point lead on a Beattie layup with 2:35 left before eventually taking a 35-29 lead into the locker room. UH shot 50 percent while getting nearly half their points from Christensen (9) and Aaron Hunkin-Claytor (8).

In the second half, the Aggies chipped away and got one, 49-48, with 12:17 remaining. But UH scored six straight to get some breathing room and eventually went up by double-digits, 69-59, on a pair of Nemeiksa free throws with less than four minutes left.

The 'Bows forced UC Davis into missing nine straight shots and 12-of-13, allowing them to take a 72-60 lead with less than a minute to go. The Aggies made one last push, cutting it to 73-68, with 23 seconds but that would be as close as it would get.

The 'Bows sealed the game at the free throw line where they went 23-of-30. UH shot 49 percent for the game and held the Aggies to 36 percent shooting in the second half. UH also out-rebounded the Aggies, 39-29.

Following the game Christensen, Nemeiksa, Marcus Greene, Jerome Palm and Ryan Rapp were honored as part of Senior Night festivities.

The Rainbow Warriors now head to the road for its final two regular-season games of the season. First up will be a pivotal matchup with CSU Bakersfield on Thursday, March. 6. Tipoff is 6:30 p.m. PT/4:30 p.m. HT.
