Men’s Basketball Falls To CSU Bakersfield On The Road

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.  – The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team fell victim to a second-half surge by CSU Bakersfield in a 76-64 road loss Thursday at the Icardo Center.

With the win CSU Bakersfield (14-18, 8-12 Big West) leapfrogged UH for seventh in the Big West standings. The Rainbow Warriors (15-15, 7-12) meanwhile dropped to a tie for eighth in the league standings with Cal Poly.

UH's postseason fate now rests on Saturday's final day of regular-season action. The 'Bows can clinch a spot in next week's Big West Championship with either a win at CSUN on Saturday (5:00 p.m. HT/3:00 p.m. HT) or a Cal Poly loss at Long Beach State.

Reigning Big West Player of the Week Jemel Jones poured in a game-high 29 points in leading the Roadrunners to their first win over UH in the last eight meetings. It was also UH's first loss in four trips to Bakersfield.

CJ Hardy contributed 19 points and six rebounds, while senior Marvin McGhee added 15 points on four three-pointers, including a pair of timely long-range shots down the stretch.

UH lost despite a huge effort from Gytis Nemeikša who led UH with 21 points in just 26 minutes of action off the bench. The senior forward shot 8-of-10 from the floor while also grabbing five rebounds. Tanner Christensen scored 12 points - all of them in the first half - while Tom Beattie finished with 11 points. Aaron Hunkin-Claytor had five points and a career-high eight assists.

UH came out strong in both halves. UH scored the first seven points of the game and after leading by four at the break, built its lead to seven early in the second half. But the Roadrunners went on a 19-4 run to take an eight point lead, a lead it would hold for the rest of the game.

UH led for the majority of the first half. The 'Bows hit six of their final seven shots and scored 10 of the final 12 points of the half to take a 37-33 advantage into the locker room. UH got a combined 23 points from Christensen (12) and Nemeiksa (11) while CSUB got 19 points from Jones.

The 'Bows took a 42-35 lead on a Beattie three-pointer at the 18:15 mark of the second half. But after that the game turned. CSUB scored 19 of the next 23 points of the game to seize an eight point lead of their own.

UH got within four, 60-56, on a Beattie bucket with 7:32 left. But McGhee drilled a three-pointer on the next possession. After UH cut the deficit to five a few minutes later, McGhee once again halted UH's momentum with another three-pointer to make it 70-62.

UH, which shot 50 percent in the first half, shot just 36 percent after the break and went 5-of-21 on three pointers. The Roadrunners shot 48 percent in the second half. CSUB out-rebounded UH 36-35, including 14-11 on the offensive glass.
