Softball Sweeps Doubleheader Over Saint Louis, Southern Indiana

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team (3-0) swept their Friday doubleheader on Day 2 of the Bank of Hawai'i Paradise Classic. The Rainbow Wahine defeated Saint Louis. 5-2 then pulled away from Southern Indiana, 7-2 on Friday night at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Hawai'i got strong performances from their starting pitchers as both Macy Brandl and Addison Kostrencich both recorded complete game wins.
 
Hawai'i 5, Saint Louis 2
UH sophomore transfer Macy Brandl earned her first complete game win as a Rainbow Wahine in her first start for the 'Bows. She allowed two runs on four hits with three walks and six strikeouts in seven innings of work.
 
In the fourth, UH broke a scoreless game as Chloe Borges belted a double down the third base line to drive in both Jamie McGaughey and Lliliana Thomas. Later with runners at the corners, UH executed a double steal with two outs as Carys Murakami stole second and Borges slid home safely to give UH a 3-0 lead.
 
The Billikens got two runs back on an Abby Mallo two-run homer to left centerfield to cut their deficit to one run, 3-2.
 
Hawai'i however responded extending their lead with an RBI single by Thomas that scored Kayara-Leigh Tuiloma in the fifth. In the sixth, Izabella Martinez came up with the bases loaded hit an RBI-single to left to drive in Murakami to give UH a 5-2 lead.
 
Saint Louis' Isabel Royle took the loss in a complete game effort. She allowed five runs on six hits with three walks and six strikeouts.
 
Hawai'i 7, Southern Indiana 2
Senior starter Addison Kostrencich (2-0) earned her second complete game win of the season, allowing two runs on three hits with a walk and a career-high seven strikeouts.
 
In the second, Hawai'i freshman Kayara-Leigh Tuiloma looped a triple past a diving rightfielder to score Borges and Murakami for a quick 2-0 lead.
 
Southern Indiana knotted the score at 2-2 in the top of the third. With two runners on and two outs, Kennedy Nalley hit a fly ball to left-centerfield. On the play, the ball clipped off Borges' glove for an error which allowed both Caroline Stapleton and Kate Satkowski to score.
 
In the bottom of the third, Borges came up with runners at the corners. She drove a fly to deep centerfield to score Yamamoto with the sacrifice fly as UH seesawed in front, 3-2.
 
Hawai'i erupted for four more runs in the sixth to extend their lead to 7-2. Amelia "Millie" Fidge came up to the plate with a runner on with no outs. Fidge promptly blasted a two-run bomb high over the left-centerfield fence to drive in Murakami. It was Fidge's second career home run and first since 2023. Later, UH then rallied on two outs. Liliana Thomas ripped a double to the left-centerfield gap that scored Cierra Yamamoto and Thomas then crossed the plate on a wild pitch to score UH's seventh and final run.
 
Southern Indiana's starter Josie Newman had an impressive outing in her second start of the season. She allowed seven runs on nine hits with four walks and an impressive 13 strikeouts in six complete innings.
 
With UH at 3-0 and the other three teams tied at 1-2, the seeding for Sunday's games was determined by most runs scored.
