HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team split its Saturday doubleheader to conclude the Bank of Hawai'i Paradise Classic on Saturday. Hawai'i shut out Southern Indianam 6-0 in their first game, but fell in the championship game to Santa Clara, 3-0 at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Hawai'i won its first four games of the season for the first time since the 2016 season whe the 'Bows started at 4-0 before falling in the final game of that year's Paradise Classic.
Hawai'i 6, Southern Indiana 0
UH starter
Macy Brandle earned her first complete game shutout on Saturday. She allowed only two hits while walking one and striking out six Screaming Eagles.
Milan Ah Yat drew a walk to lead off the fifth inning. Later with two outs UH came through with a couple of clutch hits.
Kayara-Leigh Tuiloma drove an RBI-single to rightfield to score pinch-runner
Sunni Kahanu from second. A batter later,
Izabella Martinez laced a single up the middle to drive in pinch-runner
Kennedy Thompson from second to give the 'Bows a 2-0 lead.
The Screaming Eagles threatened to score putting two runners on base with two outs in the top of the sixth. But a fly out to right snuffed out USI's the rally.
Hawai'i loaded the bases in the sixth on a walk to
Jamie McGaughey and back-to-back singles by Ah Yat and
Carys Murakami. Millie Fidge then hit a single off the shortstop to score pinch-runner
Larissa Goshi. Tuiloma followed with a grounder to short. On the play, the shortstop tried to get the force out at home, but the catcher pulled off the plate early allowing Murakami to score.
Cierra Yamamoto then lifted a sacrifice fly to left to drive in pinch runner
Maya Ichimura.
Southern Indiana starter Kylie Witthaus suffered the loss, throwing the first 5-1/3 innings, allowing five runs on five hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Whittley Hunter got the final two outs. She gave up one run on one hit with a walk.
Santa Clara 3, Hawai'i 0
The Broncos loaded the bases to start the game with one out. But the 'Bows escaped damage with a pair of fly outs to center and right respectively.
Santa Clara broke the scoreless game in the fourth on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Caitlyn Golob that scored Abigail Charpentier for the 1-0 lead.
SCU then extended its lead to 3-0 in the sixth on an RBI-single by Cairah Curran that scored Graham, and a sacrifice fly by Hazyl Gray that drove in Golob from third.
Hawai'i starter
Addison Kostrencich took the loss, dropping her record to 2-1. She allowed one run on six hits in 3-2/3 innings of work. Brandl then came in relief and threw the next 1-2/3 innings allowing two runs on four hits with a walk and a strikeout. Amelia "Millie" Fidge started the game as the designated player and made her first pitching appearance of the season. She tossed the final 1-2/3 innings with a strikeout.
Santa Clara's Gray and Cari Ferguson tossed a combined shut-out for the win. Gray improved to 2-0 throwing 5-1/3 innings allowing four hits wiht a walk and four strikeouts. Ferguson earned the save throwing the final 1.2 inning with three strikeouts.
The Rainbow Wahine have four days off before hosting the Spring Fling Tournament with Western Illinois, Utah Tech, Sacramento State, and Cal State Bakersfield. The tourney runs from Feb. 13-16 at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
