BeachBows Complete Day Two Of The Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic

HONOLULU – The 12 -ranked University of Hawai'i beach volleyball team continued round-robin play on day two of the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic Friday at Queen's Beach. UH was blanked 5-0 in a pair of matches to No. 7 LMU and No. 3 UCLA, though the match with the Bruins was much closer than the final indicated.

In the first match of the day, UH (0-4) took on LMU in the first meeting between the teams since last year's NCAA Tournament. The Lions (3-0) were too much for the 'Bows, winning in straight sets on four of five courts. For the third straight match, the UH duo of Alana Embry and Sydney Miller extended their opponents to a third set, but once again fell short, this time by a 18-21, 21-19, 15-11 count to Abbey Thorup and Lisa Luini on Court. 3. The Lions have now won six straight meetings against UH.

In the second match of the day, UH gave its best shot against UCLA (3-0). Down 2-0, UH stretched the Bruins to a third set on three courts - 1, 3 and 5 - to position themselves for a possible upset. But UCLA was able to pull out wins on each of the three courts to secure the sweep of the 'Bows. It was another heartbreaking loss for Embry and Miller, who have started the year with four-losses, all in by three-set fashion.

The Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic concludes on Saturday with the final seven matches of the round-robin tournament. UH will play No. 5 Stanford at 9:45 a.m. before finishing up the weekend with a meeting vs. No. 2 TCU at 12:15 p.m.
