Best of the Best Descend On Queen’s Beach For 2025 Opener

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i beach volleyball team begins its 2025 campaign with the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic, Feb. 20-22, at Queen's Beach. Four of the top five teams and seven of the top 12 in the country will compete against each other to start off the year. Joining the No.12 BeachBows are preseason No. 1 USC, as well as No. 2 TCU, No. 3 UCLA, No. 5 Stanford, No.7 LMU and No. 11 Arizona State. The team's will play a round-robin format for the entirety of the three-day tournament with seven matches each day.

All-Time Series Records: UH is 3-17 all-time against USC, including five straight losses…the teams have met 10 times in Honolulu with USC winning eight times…UH is 5-4 all-time against TCU, including 1-1 at home…the Horned Frogs have won four of the last five meetings…the Bruins have won the last 13 matches and 14 of the last 15…UH is 6-16 versus UCLA with two losses in last year's Duke Classic...UCLA has opened the season seven of the last eight years in Honolulu and UH is 1-9 against them at home…UH is 10-5 versus Stanford, including 7-4 in Honolulu…like UCLA, this is the seventh time in the last eight seasons the Cardinal open the season in Hawai'i...UH is 12-5 all-time against LMU, including a 9-2 mark in Honolulu… the Lions though have won the last five meetings and have ended UH's season in each of the last three NCAA Tournaments…UH is a perfect 8-0 against Arizona State, including 3-0 in Honolulu…this will be first meeting between the teams since 2022.
 
The Squad: UH's roster totals 16 players…the BeachBows return 12 players from last year's team that went 24-12 overall and placed No. 11 in the final AVCA rankings.…headlining the returnees is second team All-American Alana Embry who enters her second season as a BeachBow… all-conference players Sydney Amiatu and Sydney Miller also back as well as starters Julia Lawrenz, Sarah Burton, Caprice Lorenzo and Julia Thelle …UH welcomes four newcomers on the squad, two transfers in Tessa Marocco (Irvine Valley College) and Kasen Rosenthal (Arizona indoor) and true freshman in Ayva Moi (Oceanside, Calif.) and Jasmine Wandeler (Stans, Switzerland)…UH's diverse roster includes players from Australia, Brazil, Guam, Norway, and Switzerland as well as five different U.S. states (Arizona, California, Colorado, Oregon and Texas).
 
The Skipper: Evan Silberstein enters his 11th season overall in the program and his fourth season as the head coach for the BeachBows…Silberstein owns a 75-38 record in three seasons while leading the Rainbow Wahine to three NCAAs and the 2024 Big West title…he is a two-time co-Big West Coach of the Year (2022, '24)...during his time as both a head coach and assistant he has helped lead UH to four Big West titles and eight post-season appearances, including seven in the NCAA Tournament...UH also welcomes first-year assistant coaches Bryan Carvalho and Victoria Prince to the staff…Carvalho, a Kailua native, previously won a pair of NAIA national titles with Ottawa University Arizona….Prince, a former indoor All-American with the Rainbow Wahine who went on to play on the AVP, led Oaks Christian High School in California to a No. 5 Max Preps national ranking in 2023. 
 
The Schedule: The OUTRIGGER Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic is one of two events in the first three weeks that UH will host at Queen's Beach...the 'Bows will also hold the Heineken Queen's Cup, March 6-8 …UH's third and final home event sees them host Cal and Grand Canyon during Senior Weekend (April 12-13) on campus at the Ching Complex…in all, UH will play all but two squads that are in the AVCA preseason Top 20, including every single team in the preseason Top 10.…this year's Big West Championship will be held April 24-25 in Santa Monica, Calif., while the 2025 NCAA Championships was moved back to Gulf Shores, Ala., May 2-4, after originally being scheduled to be played in Huntington Beach, Calif..
