HONOLULU – Behind a pair of big innings the Hawai'i baseball team finished off a season-opening four-game sweep of Marshall with a 10-2 win Sunday at Les Murakami Stadium.
The Rainbow Warriors extended their nation-leading home-winning streak to 15 games while winning their ninth game in a row dating back to last year, also the longest active streak nationally. Additionally, UH's 4-0 start is its best since winning the first four games of 2018.
After Marshall got on the board with a run in the first inning, the 'Bows came roaring back with four runs in the second. UH pushed across all four runs with two outs, starting with a
Konnor Palmeira two-strike RBI single to tie it up at one.
Matthew Miura gave Hawai'i the lead with a run-scoring single one pitch later, and
Shunsuke Sakaino continued his strong opening weekend with a two-run double to make it 4-1.
The Thundering Herd made it 4-2 with a run in the third, but the 'Bows put up another crooked number with five in the fifth to open up a seven-run lead.
Draven Nushida came through yet again, doubling with two outs and the bases loaded to drive in three and make it 7-2. After a hit by pitch, Palmeira delivered his second and third RBIs of the day with a double to left center to stretch the lead to 9-2.
Nine UH pitchers combined to hold Marshall to two runs while scattering nine hits, striking out nine batters while walking just one.
Ethan Thomas entered with the bases loaded and no outs in the first inning and retired three straight batters to limit the Herd to just one run. He then set Marshall down in order in the second, earning the win in his first collegiate appearance.
Sakaino finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBIs and led the way offensively all weekend, finishing the series batting .583 with seven RBIs and five runs scored, including a walk-off single Saturday. Nushida went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored, going 4-for-9 with five RBIs over the weekend including the walk-off on Friday.
The Rainbow Warriors continue their season-opening homestand with a four-game series against Wichita State, beginning at 6:35 p.m. Thursday at Les Murakami Stadium.
