Walk-Off Warriors Strike Again in Series Opener

HONOLULU – For the third time in the first five games, the Hawai'i baseball team won in walk-off fashion, this time in extra innings to come away with a 4-3 victory over Wichita State in Thursday's series opener.

Elijah Ickes provided the heroics this time, delivering a perfectly placed infield hit between the third baseman and shortstop with two outs in the 10th inning to set off yet another celebration.

The win extended the Rainbow Warriors' nation-best home-winning streak to 16 games, while also running UH's win streak to 10 games dating back to last year, also the longest nationally.  The 'Bows also improved to 5-0 on the year, marking the first time since 1999 that they have won at least their first five games of the season.

Matthew Miura got the 10th-inning rally started by drawing a one-out walk before moving to second on a ground out to bring up Ickes. Miura moved to third on a wild pitch, and Ickes hit a 2-2 pitch past a diving Shocker third baseman and under the glove of the shortstop to score Miura and give UH its third walk-off win.

After the Shockers got on the board first with a solo homer in the top of the fourth, the 'Bows came right back with a pair of runs in the bottom half.

Ben Zeigler-Namoa tied things up by smashing a solo homer out to dead center field with one out. Itsuki Takemoto followed with a single, moved to third on an error, and scored on a Jared Quandt squeeze bunt to make it 2-1, UH.

Konnor Palmeira delivered a two-out RBI single in the seventh to put the 'Bows in front 3-1, but the Shockers scored twice in the eighth thanks to five free passes by UH pitching to tie it up, setting the stage for UH's extra-inning heroics.

With the win, head coach Rich Hill picked up his 99th as the Rainbow Warrior skipper. A win in Friday's game would make him the fastest head coach to 100 wins at the helm of the Hawai'i program.

Sebastian Gonzalez got his second start of the year and struck out four batters over four innings of one-run ball before Freddy Rodriguez shut out the Shockers over the next three frames with four strikeouts. Isaiah Magdaleno got the win after throwing a scoreless ninth as UH pitching combined for 10 strikeouts.

The two teams continue their series Friday night starting at 6:35 p.m. at Les Murakami Stadium.
