SALT LAKE CITY — The University of Hawai'i swimming and diving teams dropped a pair of dual meets to Utah on Monday at the Ute Natatorium in Salt Lake City.
Rainbow Wahine: Utah 126, Hawai'i 98
The Rainbow Wahine swimmers recorded 15 podium finishes, highlighted by five event victories against the Utes.
The women opened the dual meet strong, capturing the 200 medley relay to kick off the dual meet. The Rainbow Wahine team of Eva Kovaluk, Zofia Tyminska, Aziza Meyer and Quincy Key claimed gold with a time of 1:44.02. Later, the Rainbow Wahine 200 free relay squad of Holly Nelson, Key, Meyer and Rebekka Luoto won gold, clocking in with a time of 1:35.56.
The Rainbow Wahine swept the podium in the 100 fly, led by Kailee Chow's victory in 57.32, followed by Iz Meraz (57.83) who finished second and Mia Blazevska Eminova (57.97) who grabbed the bronze. All three UH swimmers--Chow, Meraz, and Blazevska Emimova finished with a second of each other. . Nelson swam a pair of podium finishes, winning the 100 free with a time of 51.85 and earning silver in the 50 free clocking in at 23.71. Freshman Gabriela Kelly won the 500 free with a mark of 5:10.23 and added a runner-up finish in the 200 free touching the wall at 1:55.47.
Additional bronze finishes came from Kovaluk in the 100 back (58.62), Tyminska in the 100 breast (1:05.58), Key in the 50 free (23.82) and Blazevska Eminova in the 200 IM (2:10.37).
In addition to Key's bronze in the 50 free, she posted the fastest split on the two winning relay squads by a large margin.
Rainbow Warriors: Utah 158, Hawai'i 66
In the men's competition, Karol Ostrowski earned gold in the 100 free touching the wall with a time of 44.74. Tim Brown won the 50 free with a time of 20.78, closely followed by teammate Regan Richardson who placed third (21.15). The Rainbow Warrior 200 free relay team of Finn Brophy, Brown, Victor Dagenais and Richardson posted a runner-up finish with a mark of 1:22.71. Brown recorded the fastest split of the competition on his two relay events.
Diving
In diving, Juan Esteban Ramirez Tamayo led the 'Bows with a victory in the 1-meter dive (329.18) and added a silver finish in the 3-meter dive (355.80). Teammate Tristan Rodriguez placed third (287.55) in the 3-meter springboard.
On the women's side, Lovissa Gustavsson earned the Rainbow Wahine's lone podium claiming bronze in the 3-meter dive (308.18). She finished fourth with a 266.85 in the 1-meter.
