The University of Hawai'i coed sailing team wrapped up competition this weekend in the Open West Coast Championship, held in Mission Bay, Calif. Erik Anderson also sailed at the national level, competing in Norfolk, Va., in the ICSA Singlehanded Championship.
The coed squad completed 18 total races — split evenly between A and B divisions — against a field of 16 other schools. Both A and B divisions scored 69 points, giving Hawai'i a total of 138. Competing in all nine A division races, the team of Everett McAvoy and Alister Muto secured three top-four finishes, including one second-place finish. Martha Schuessler and Stella Taherian sailed six races in the B division, also placing in the top four in three of their races. Arden Rathkopf and Ann Tokoyoda sailed three races in the B division as well. Co-host San Diego State won the regatta with 61 points.
Anderson, who made his singlehanded national debut, faced tough competition made up of 17 other sailors from across the country. He is the first UH sailor since Mark Spector in 2007 to qualify for this event, and the sixth individual to do so. Anderson's 112 points placed him 17th in the event. Harvard University's Robby Meek was a perfect 10-for-10 on the weekend, winning with 10 points.
The UH coed sailing team will seek a strong finish to the fall season next weekend at the PCCSC Fall Championship in Santa Barbara, Calif.
