Women’s Basketball Survives Scare From Saint Martin's

HONOLULU — The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team needed an extra five minutes to survive a stern test from Saint Martin's in a 46-41 overtime win on Thursday at Bankoh Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.

Trailing by eight heading into the fourth quarter, the Rainbow Wahine held the Saints without a field goal for the final period of regulation and the entire overtime period while allowing just four points over the final 15 minutes of the game. That gave them enough room to scratch out just enough offense to improve to 2-0 for the first time since the 2015-16 season.

The Division II Saints of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference gave UH all it could handle but ultimately fell short of an upset. UH's defensive stand down the stretch saved them on a night that saw them turn the ball over a whopping 30 times while hitting just one of its 26 3-point attempts.

UH freshman guard Bailey Flavell put together another outstanding performance leading the way with a game-high 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including five key points in overtime. The New Zealand native added eight rebounds and three steals. Freshman guard Keiara Curtis also sparked the Rainbow Wahine with 14 points, seven rebounds and three steals off the bench. She scored five of UH's nine points in the fourth-quarter rally and hit the 'Bows' lone 3-pointer of the night.
Kyra Webb grabbed 10 rebounds and Saniyah Neverson had nine to help the 'Bows build a 56-32 advantage on the boards. Despite the rate of turnovers, the 'Bows allowed just seven points off of Saints' takeaways.

The Saints scored the game's first bucket from 3-point range in a slow start offensively for both teams. Saint Martin's first three field goals came from behind the arc and the Saints led 10-8 after the first period.

Flavell scored on a drive to end a nearly five-minute UH drought without a field goal, but the Saints responded on the other end and hit their fourth 3-pointer to open up a 15-10 lead. The margin grew to eight before Jade Peacock's first bucket of the season sparked a 9-0 UH run to take a 21-20 lead. Flavell scored twice on strong moves and Curtis scored on an inbounds play while drawing a foul and completed the three-point play to push UH ahead.

But the 'Bows went scoreless over the final 2:21 of the half. UH committed 16 turnovers in a ragged first 20 minutes and the Saints hit four 3-pointers on their way to taking a 24-21 lead into halftime.

Points continued to come in a trickle in the third quarter and Saint Martin's led 37-29 when the Saints drained their seventh triple while UH was 0 for 12 from long range.

UH then opened the fourth quarter with a 9-0 run to take the lead. Curtis drained UH's first 3-pointer of the night to bring the 'Bows within a point and two free throws by Izzy Forsyth pushed UH ahead at 38-37. UH held the Saints scoreless for the first 8:50 of the period until the Saints tied it at 38-38 by making one of two free throws.

The Saints got the ball back with 36.7 seconds left, but the 'Bows came up with a steal and called timeout with 20 seconds showing. UH's attempts in the final seconds came up short and the game went into overtime.

Flavell emerged from a scramble for the ball to score the first basket of OT with 2:46 left. Webb added a bucket and Flavell's jumper gave a six-point lead that Saint Martin's could not recover from.

The Rainbow Wahine continue their season-opening homestand in the Bank of Hawai'i Classic set for Nov. 21 and 23. The 'Bows open the tournament against Loyola Marymount on Nov. 21 at 11 a.m. in their "Education Day" game at Bankoh Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. They'll face Portland on Nov. 23.
