Rainbow Warriors Turned Back In Shootout Versus San Jose State

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i football team saw their three-game win streak come to a close with a 45-38 loss to San Jose State Saturday night at CEFCU Stadium. The Rainbow Warriors dropped to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in Mountain West play.

It was an offensive showcase as UH and SJSU combined for more than 1,100 yards of offense on the evening. The Spartans (3-5, 2-2 MW) built a lead that ballooned to as many as 17 points, but needed to hold off a rally by the Rainbow Warriors who cut the deficit to just three points early in the fourth quarter. The game ultimately ended in the fifth straight win in the series for the Spartans who retained possession of the Dick Tomey Legacy Trophy.

San Jose State racked up 630 yards of offense, the most by a UH opponent in four years. Most of that damage came through the air with Walker Eget throwing for 458 yards passing, including nine plays of 20 or more yards. Danny Scudero, the nation's leading receiver, continued his tear this season with 215 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

The Rainbow Warriors offense did all they could to keep up with the Spartans. Micah Alejado tossed for 367 yards and three touchdowns – the fourth straight game he has thrown for at least 300 yards and three touchdowns. Jackson Harris (134 yards, 2 touchdowns) and Pofele Ashlock (7 catches, 104 yards) each went over 100 yards receiving, while senior running back Landon Sims also chipped in with two touchdowns, but it wasn't enough.

UH scored on its opening drive of the game to take a 7-0 lead. But SJSU scored on each of its next six possessions, including its final five drives of the first half. The Spartans took a 31-14 lead into the locker room.

The Warriors scored on their opening drive of the second half, but San Jose State answered with a Scudero 62-yard catch as the Spartans maintained their 17-point cushion late into the third quarter.

UH got a Sims 2-yard run at the end of the third quarter and when Harris scored on a yard pass from Alejado, it was a 38-35 game with 9:32 left.

The Spartans responded with a 7-play, 75-yard drive, capped by Steve Chavez-Soto's third rushing touchdown of the game to push the lead back to 10 points with a little more than five minutes left.

Kansei Matsuzawa drilled a 24-yard field goal with 1:16 left to make it a 45-38 game and keep UH's hopes alive. But the 'Bows failed to recover the ensuing onside kick as the Spartans escaped with the win.

With the late field goal Matsuzawa tied a UH single-season record of 21 field goals made, established by Richard Spelman in 1984. Matsuzawa has now made 22 straight field goals dating back to last year for the second-longest active streak in college football.

The Rainbow Warriors will now return home for the first time in nearly a month when it hosts first-place San Diego State on Saturday, Nov. 8.  Kickoff is 6:00 p.m. at Ching Complex.
