REDWOOD CITY, Calif.—Both the coed and women's squads for University of Hawai'i sailing were in action this weekend in a pair of regattas hosted by Stanford in Northern California. The Rainbow Wahine finished second in the PCCSC Women's Fall Championship, while the coed sailors finished fourth in the Top-Nine Fall Invite.
Despite seeing inconsistent winds in the Women's Fall Championship, the field of nine PCCSC teams completed 28 races, divided evenly between A and B divisions. The Rainbow Wahine battled to a second-place finish with 121 points, placing them 80 points ahead of the third-place UCSB Gauchos. Competing in all 14 A Division races, the team of Martha Schuessler and Avery Hogue secured top-three finishes in eight and concluded the event ranked second overall. A quartet of Stella Taherian, Peyton Lieser, Kahlia Bailey, and Leila Landay sailed in the B division. Host Stanford outpaced UH by 38 points, finishing with a total of 83 to secure the regatta.
The coed squad also sailed in 28 races, split between A and B divisions, against eight other conference rivals. The A and B divisions started out hot for UH, placing third and second in the first set of races, respectively, before ultimately ending the event in fourth place with 236 points. The familiar team of Erik Anderson and Amanda Turner delivered another strong performance, winning three of their races and ranking fourth overall as a team in the A division. Everett McAvoy skippered all 14 races with freshman Alister Muto at crew in the B division. Stanford also won this competition with a regatta-low 155 points.
The UH coed sailing team will next travel Mission Bay, Calif., for the Open West Coast Championship, on Nov. 8-9. Erik Anderson will also be representing UH on the national level that weekend in Norfolk, Va. in the ICSA Singlehanded National Championship.
The Rainbow Wahine, meanwhile, will conclude its fall campaign one weekend later on Nov. 15-16, at the PCCSC Fall Championship in Santa Barbara, Calif.
