Rainbow Warriors Win At Colorado State; Gain Bowl Eligibility

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The University of Hawai'i football team earned a milestone victory after an emphatic, 31-19, victory over Colorado Saturday at Canvas Stadium. With its third straight win, UH improved to 6-2 overall and gained bowl eligibility for the first time in the Timmy Chang era.

The Rainbow Warriors did it by controlling the game on both sides of the ball. UH racked up 435 yards of offense, while eclipsing 30 points for the third straight contest. Meanwhile the UH defense held the Rams (2-5,1-2 MW) to just 261 yards, including just 85 yards on the ground, nearly half of their season rushing average. The UH defense shut out the CSU offense for the first three quarters, while racking up a season-high six sacks.

Micah Alejado threw for 301 yards and three touchdowns with Jackson Harris proving to be the main target. The sophomore receiver finished with five catches for 109 yards and two touchdowns and became the first UH player since John Ursua in 2018 to notch three straight 100-yard receiving games.

UH never trailed in the game and entered the final quarter up by 17 points, but needed to hold off a late rally by the Rams to secure their second straight road win of the season.

The 'Bows, who improved to 3-1 in Mountain West play, came out of the gates strong with a 10-play, 65-yard drive. It was capped by Nick Cenacle's first touchdown of the season, a 17-yard catch from Alejado, that put UH up 7-0.

UH continued to dominate the first quarter, but CSU received a much-needed jolt with Javion Kinnard's 91-yard punt return as the first quarter expired to knot the game, 7-7.

The Warriors regained the lead on Harris' 75-yard catch-and-run midway through the second quarter as the 'Bows held a 14-7 lead at halftime. UH proceeded to score on its opening drive of the second half as Harris' second touchdown of the game, a 9-yard scoring reception from Alejado, gave UH a double-digit lead.

UH extended its lead to 24-7 when Kansei Matsuzawa nailed a 26-yard field goal late in the third quarter. In the process the Japan-native set a new UH record with 21 straight field goals made dating back to last season, surpassing UH great Jason Elam who made 20 straight in 1989.

However, Colorado State, which barely had 100 yards of offense through the first three quarters, came to life late. The Rams scored touchdowns on back-to-back drives in the fourth quarter and when Tahj Bullock ran it in from 3 yards out at the the 6:50 mark, it was suddenly just a 24-19 UH lead.

UH though would turn back any comeback hopes for CSU. The 'Bows responded with a an 8-play, 75-yard drive that was punctuated by a 35-yard touchdown rush by Cam Barfield on a 4th-and-1. Barfield's longest rush of his career put UH back up by double-digits and out of reach with 2:23 left.

The Rainbow Warriors will now have their second bye week of the month and next return to the field on Saturday, Nov. 2 for a road matchup at San Jose State.  Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. PT/4:30 p.m. HT (CBS Sports Network).
