HONOLULU — University of Hawai'i men's swimmer Mario Surkovic has been named Big West Men's Athlete of the Week for swimming/diving, following a standout performance to open the season at the Triton Invitational in La Jolla, Calif.
The senior delivered five top-five finishes, including two victories, to help UH secure a second-place finish in the men's standings at the Triton Invitational. The honor marks Surkovic's fourth career weekly conference award, and his first from the Big West.
Surkovic was instrumental in leading the Rainbow Warriors to a first-place finish and setting a new Canyonview Aquatic Center pool record in the 200 free relay (1:18.99), holding off California with a blazing 19.19 split on the third leg. He also helped UH earn a bronze finish in the 200 medley relay, where he clocked a 50 breast split of 23.98.
Surkovic also impressed in individual competition, claiming gold in the 200 IM, clocking in at 1:47.44, to secure UH's first individual victory of the season. He also captured bronze in the 100 free, touching the wall at 43.52, and finished fourth in the 100 breast with a time of 54.65.
UH has a week off before returning to competition hosting a pair of dual meets against Grand Canyon on Oct. 24-25 at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. UH's official home opener will also mark the season debut for the Rainbow Wahine and Rainbow Warrior dive teams.
