Women's Basketball Rolls into Road Game at Cal State Fullerton

FULLERTON, Calif. — Coming off a dramatic victory on Thursday, the University of Hawai'i women's basketball team carries an eight-game winning streak into Saturday's matchup with Cal State Fullerton at Titan Gym in Fullerton, Calif.  Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. Pacific Time (noon Hawai'i Time).
 
The Rainbow Wahine (14-6, 8-2 Big West) opened their road trip by pulling out a 65-63 thriller in overtime at UC San Diego and enter the second half of the Big West schedule tied with UC Irvine for first place in the conference. UC Davis and Long Beach State are one game behind the leaders in a crowded pack atop the standings.

  • After Thursday's games, the 'Bows ranked No. 4 in the nation in field-goal percentage defense at 33.5% for the season. UH entered the week at No. 2 nationally.
  • UH leads the Big West and ranks fifth in NCAA Division I in scoring defense in allowing 53.2 points per game. The 'Bows are holding conference opponents to 52.1 points per game.
  • UH has held 16 opponents under 40% shooting, including seven games under 30%, and is 14-2 in those contests.
  • Thursday's game at UCSD marked the first time since Jan. 2 that a UH opponent scored more than 50 points. The 'Bows had held opponents under 50 for a program-record six consecutive games.
  • The 'Bows remain atop the Big West and rank 19th nationally in blocks per game (5.0). Three UH players rank in the top 10 in the Big West in blocks per game — Ritorya Tamilo (fourth, 1.37 bpg), Imani Perez (ninth, 1.11) and Brooklyn Rewers (10th, 0.95). Perez is one block away from joining the program's career top 10.

STACKING WINS
  • UH's current winning streak is the longest active streak in the Big West and the program's longest since the 'Bows won eight straight late in the 2021-22 season on their way to winning the Big West Championship. UH last won nine games in a row during a 15-game run in the 2014-15 season.
  • UH is holding opponents to 47.0 points per game on 31% shooting during their current winning streak. 
  • UH has controlled the boards over the last eight games with a plus-11.8 rebounding margin over that span. The 'Bows are 12-0 when outrebounding their opponents this season.
  • The 'Bows have a 13.6-point scoring margin per game during their winning streak.
  • UH enters the week 5-3 on the road this season and has won its last four road games.

'BOWS NOTES
  • Lily Wahinekapu continues to lead the team with 11.1 points per game, 57 assists and 26 steals. The senior led UH with 19 points against UCSD and is 17 away from joining UH's 1,000-point club. She is averaging 13.0 points while shooting 47.8% from the field in Big West play.
  • Imani Perez has scored in double figures five of the last six games, averaging 12.3 points while shooting 59.6% from the field over that span, including 43% (9 for 21) from 3-point range. The junior is shooting 56.4% in conference play.
  • MeiLani McBee has 191 3-pointers for her career and is 14 away from the program's record held by Amy Atwell. The senior has played in 128 games in her career, including the last 111 in a row, and moved past Amy Atwell (2016-22) as the program's all-time leader on Jan. 25 against UC Irvine.
  • Senior guard Kelsie Imai scored a season-high 10 points at UCSD and had four assists against the Tritons to move into UH's career top 10 with 294. She is also tied for fifth in games played with 124.
  • Center Ritorya Tamilo posted the first double-double of her career with 11 points and 11 rebounds against UC Irvine on Jan. 25. The freshman is third on the team with 7.9  points per game and is shooting a team-high 51.5% from the field. She also leads the team with 5.2 rebounds per game and 26 blocked shots.
  • UH head coach Laura Beeman earned her 600th win of her career on Jan. 16 at CSUN. She posted 390 wins at Mt. San Antonio College (1994-2010) and now has 214 over her 13 seasons leading the Rainbow Wahine.

 
THE MATCHUP

  • The Rainbow Wahine and Titans meet for the 54th time in a series that dates back to Dec. 17, 1983, a 64-45 Cal State Fullerton victory.
  • UH has won the last 11 meetings with Cal State Fullerton and 13 of the last 14. The current streak began on March 11, 2020 in the quarterfinals of the Big West Championship in Long Beach, Calif.
  • UH won the first meeting of the season 54-44 on Jan. 11 at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. Imani Perez led the 'Bows with 14 points.
  • Cal State Fullerton last defeated UH on Feb. 29, 2020, 70-64 at Titan Gym.
  • UH is 13-11 against the Titans in Fullerton and has won the last three road games in the series.
  • The Titans dropped their first eight conference games then swept a road trip last week with wins at CSU Bakersfield and UC Santa Barbara.
  • Cal State Fullerton head coach Jeff Harada is in his eighth season leading the Titans and has a record of 82-140.
  • Harada graduated from Hawaii Baptist Academy and coached at Hawaii Pacific University, going 58-48 over four seasons. Assistant coach Nicholas Milan graduated from Kaimuki High School and UH.
  • Aaliyah Stanton entered the week fourth in the Big West in scoring average and leads the Titans with 14.8 points per game.
  • Eva Levingston leads the Big West with 157 total rebounds and an average of 8.3 boards per game. Aixchel Hernandez entered the week fourth in the conference at 7.4 rebounds per game.
  • Hernandez ranks second in the Big West with 32 blocked shots and 1.88 per game.
  • The Titans are second in the Big West and 27th in the nation in 3-point percentage defense in holding opponents to 26.5% shooting.
  • The Titans have one player from Hawai'i on their roster in sophomore guard Kaliana Salazar-Harrell, a graduate of Konawaena High School.
