Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Clipped At UC Davis, 68-66

DAVIS, Calif. –  In a game that came down to the final buzzer, the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team fell just short in a 68-66 setback to UC Davis Thursday night at University Credit Union Center. The Rainbow Warriors dropped to 12-7 overall and 4-4 in the Big West.

TY Johnson, the nation's fifth-leading scorer, poured in 23 points, including the go-ahead jumper with 33 second left to lift the Aggies (12-8, 6-3) to their third straight victory. It also gave them their fifth straight win over UH in Davis, dating back to 2021.

UH lost despite a career effort by Harry Rouhliadeff who finished with 21 points, seven rebounds and an assist in 24 minutes of action off the bench. The junior forward scored 17 of his points in the second half, helping the 'Bows erase an eight-point deficit and putting them in position to win.

Down by two with 7.5 seconds left UH had one final possession to win or to extend the game. But UH missed two golden opportunities near the basket as Marcus Greene's driving layup was off the mark and Tanner Christensen's putback was too strong off the glass.

It concluded an exciting back-and-forth second half that saw the Aggies hit seven of their final nine field goals and UH convert 17-of-20 free throws.

The first half was an offensive struggle for both teams. UCD clung to a 25-23 lead, shooting just 32 percent in the opening 20 minutes. UH, meanwhile, was held to first-half season-lows in both points and shooting percentage (.286).

That changed as the team's heated up after intermission. The Aggies built a 38-30 lead less than four minutes into the second half. But UH went on a 17-5 surge, with a dozen points coming from Rouhliadeff, in taking a 47-43 lead with 11 minutes left.

From there it was nip-and-tuck. The Aggies went up 57-50 with less than six minutes left, but UH rallied and a Greene three-pointer at the 2:22 mark knotted things up, 63-63. UH took a 66-65 lead on a Christensen free throw with 52 seconds left. But Johnson hit he go-ahead jumper on the next possession, then picked up a steal and drew a foul on the ensuing UH possession. Johnson hit one of two free throws with 7.5 seconds and the Aggies held on during the final sequence to pick up the home win.

Christensen was just shy of a double-double with 11 points and eight rebounds, while Kody Williams and Ryan Rapp each added 10 points. Tamba finished with a career-high 19 points for UC Davis.

The Rainbow Warriors will next head south for a meeting with conference leader UC Irvine on Saturday, Jan. 25. Tipoff is 7:00 p.m. PT/5:00 p.m. HT.
