Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’ Basketball Falls At UC Irvine, 71-55

IRVINE, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team dropped its second straight road game with a 71-55 loss to league-leading UC Irvine Saturday night at the Bren Events Center.

Both teams entered the game coming off of tight road losses. But it was the Anteaters (18-3, 8-1 Big West) who rebounded best, scoring the first 11 points of the game and never looking back in a wire-to-wire win.

The loss dropped UH to 12-8 overall and into a tie for seventh in the Big West with a 4-5 mark. UCI, meanwhile, bounced back from its first conference loss of the year to remain in first place and improve to a perfect 7-0 at home this year. In the process the Anteaters extended their home win streak to 21 straight games dating back to last year..

Facing one of the top defensive teams in the country, UH shot a season low 32 percent from the field, while the team's 55 points tied a season low. It was the ninth time this year that UCI held an opponent to under 60 points this year.

Myles Che scored a game-high 17 points to lead the Anteaters, while Devin Tillis notched a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds.  Nine different 'Bows got in the scoring column, led by Akira Jacobs who finished with 12 points.

UC Irvine blitzed UH in the first three minutes of the game to set the tone. The Anteaters scored 11 straight as UH struggled with four missed shots and three turnovers in its first seven possessions. The Anteaters eventually took a 34-24 lead into the locker room after a Che jumper at the halftime buzzer.

UH wouldn't go down without a fight. UCI pushed its lead back to 15 after intermission and led 48-34 with 13 minutes left. The 'Bows, though, went on a 10-0 run, highlighted by back-to-back three-pointers by Harry Rouhliadeff and Marcus Greene, and suddenly UH clawed back within four points, 48-44, with 10 minutes left.

That would be as close as it would get as UCI squelched UH's comeback hopes. The Anteaters hit consecutive three-pointers to spark their own run of 11 unanswered points and a double-digit cushion they would hold the rest of the way.

The Rainbow Warriors now return home for a pair of games, beginning with a meeting versus UC San Diego on Thursday, Jan. 30. Tipoff is 7:00 p.m. at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
