Rainbow Sailors Claim Peter Wenner Rainbow Invite Once Again

HONOLULU — The University of Hawai'i sailing team mastered its home waters, claiming the  Peter Wenner Rainbow Invitational for the ninth straight time in the two-day regatta, held Jan. 18-19, at Keehi Lagoon.

A total of 18 teams representing 11 schools from across the country and Canada competed in UH's spring opener. The weekend featured sunny skies and brisk wind throughout as the regatta concluded with 24 total races completed - 12 each in the A and B division.

UH fielded four teams with all of them finishing in the top seven of the standings. UH's top squad of skippers Erik Anderson, Amanda Turner, Everett McAvoy, Sophia Shaeffer, Grady Van Ness and Ann Tokoyoda distanced themselves from the rest of the field with a regatta low of 62 points, nearly 70 points ahead of its nearest competition.  For the second straight year, Anderson and Turner were dominant in the A division, winning eight of 10 races, including each of their first six of the weekend.

The Rainbow Green squad finished runner-up behind a strong performance by Arden Rathkopf and Stella Taherian who won four races and finished in the top three in nine  B division races. Also sailing for the Green team were Kees Horn, Vivian Bønsager, Erin Wilmore, Zach Brennan and Rafferty Eddy.

UH fielded a pair of women's teams in the regatta, finishing fifth and seventh overall, respectively. Malia Johnson, Elin ReigstadMartha Schuessler, Morgan Carew and Bonsager sailed for the fifth-place squad, while Elizabeth Fourney, Avery Hogue, Kahlia Bailey, Hailey Riven and Peyton Lieser competed for the Rainbow White squad that finished seventh.

Next up for the coed team is the PCCSC Top Nine Open, Feb. 15-16, in Redwood City, Calif. The Rainbow Wahine will compete in its next collegiate event at the Jeff Simon Women's Regatta in San Diego, Jan. 25-26.
