Women’s Basketball Turns Up The Defense Against Cal State Fullerton

HONOLULU — The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team picked up its third straight victory with a 54-44 win over Cal State Fullerton Saturday night at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. After dropping their first two Big West games of the season, the Rainbow Wahine have gained momentum in improving to 9-6 overall and 3-2 in conference.

UH got off to a rough offensive start, but relied on its trademark defense to grind out the win. The 'Bows held Cal State Fullerton (2-14, 0-6)  to single-digit scoring in each of the first three quarters and just 19 points entering the final frame. The Titans shot just 33 percent from the field en route to its second-lowest scoring output of the season and UH held an opponent under 40 percent shooting for the 11th time this season.

That defensive performance helped UH overcome its own offensive struggles. The 'Bows shot just 35 percent from the field, including just 3-for-19 on threes. UH also turned the ball over 20 times. But the 'Bows did plenty enough defensively to continue its domination of the series with Fullerton. UH has defeated the Titans 11 straight times and extended its win streak to 15 straight in Honolulu.

Imani Perez scored a season-high 14  points and MeiLani McBee had 10 points and a game-high six rebounds. Jovi Lefotu added eight points and a career-high five assists. Aaliyah Stanton finished with a game-high 18 points for the Titans before fouling out in the final minute of the game.

The 'Bows had nine turnovers and a 1-for-7 start from the field in the first quarter, but held Cal State Fullerton to 3-for-12 shooting. UH trailed 6-4 after the first 10 minutes in its lowest scoring period of the season.

UH warmed up in the second quarter, and Perez's drive and layup triggered an 8-0 UH run. McBee's second 3-pointer of the quarter extended the UH lead to 17-8 at the 3:49 mark. Rebecca Moors drained her second 3-pointer of her freshman season, Mia 'Uhila hit a jumper to beat the shot clock and the 'Bows took a 22-13 lead into halftime.

UH opened the third quarter with a 10-2 run and extended the lead to 32-15 when Lefotu hit a pull-up jumper and Perez dropped in a putback. McBee scored off of an offensive rebound just before the buzzer and UH led 36-19 going into the fourth quarter.

Cal State Fullerton hit four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and closed to 45-33 with 2:35 left. UH again went cold from the field in the final minutes but managed to keep its distance from the Titans and finished off the win with Perez's layup off of Lefotu's fifth assist.

UH dominated the glass with a 41-23 advantage and were efficient from the free throw line where the 'Bows finished 17-of-20.

The Rainbow Wahine embark on a two-game road trip next week, playing at CSUN (3-12, 1-5) on Jan. 16 and at CSU Bakersfield (1-15, 1-5) on Jan. 18.
