Men's Tennis Fights Hard But Falls Short Vs. Arkansas

HONOLULU--The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team (0-4) fought hard until the end, but fell to Arkansas (2-0), 5-2 on Friday afternoon at the UH Tennis Complex. It was the Razorbacks' second-straight win over UH in as many days.

Arkansas won the No. 3 doubles match to take lead, but the Rainbow Warriors had its chances on courts No. 1 and 2. But UH's No. 2 duo of Karl Collins and Diego Dalisay came up just short, falling 7-5 to Arkansas' Connor Smillie and Jakub Vrba. The No. 1 court's match between UH's Azuma Visaya and Tianhao Hou and Bozo Barum and Marino Jakic was knotted at 6-6 and went unfinished when Arkansas earned the doubles point.

The Razorbacks won their first three singles matches to officially win the match, but the 'Bows kept fighting hard. Hawai'i's final three all forced their matches to a third set tie-breaker. UH's No. 3 Dalisay dropped his first set against Jakic but battled his way back to win the second frame by a break to even his match at a set apiece. Dalisay then edged out Jakic in the third set super-tie-breaker to win his first singles match of the season, 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-8).  On the No. 4 court, UH's Andy Hernandez rallied against 85th-ranked Jakub Vrba but came up just short in his third set tiebreaker, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-6).

For the second-straight day and match, UH's 77th-ranked Visaya came from a set down to force a third set tiebreaker and then come away with a nailbiting victory. Arkansas' Lukas Palovic won the first set, but then Visaya clawed his way back into the match by winning the second set in a tie-breaker by winning the final three points to force a third set super tie-breaker. In the deciding 10-point breaker, Visaya pulled away behind some solid serving down the stretch to earn the hard fought victory, 2-6, 7-6 (8-6), 1-0 (10-7).

The Rainbow Warriors continue their month-long homestand with a dual match against former Westernn Athletic Conference and future Mountain West  rival Nevada on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 4:00 p.m. HT at the UH Tennis Complex. The following day, the 'Bows will head over the Pali to take on cross-town rival Hawai'i Pacific at the Kailua Racquet Club on Friday, Jan. 17 at 5:00 p.m. HT. It will be the first match for head coach Hendrik Bode against his former team, the HPU Sharks.
