WAIPAHU, O'ahu – Fabiola Zamora converted on a penalty kick in the 79th minute to break a scoreless tie and lead the Hawai'i women's soccer team to its fourth win in a row with a 1-0 victory over Cal State Bakersfield Thursday.
The Rainbow Wahine (6-6, 2-0 Big West) extended their winning streak to four – their longest since Aug. 21-Sept. 2, 2016 – and got off to a 2-0 start to Big West play for the second time since joining the conference and first time since 2019.
Neither team was able to generate any real scoring threats in the opening 45 minutes, heading into the half scoreless.
Nalani Damacion fired off a shot on goal in the 29th minute that Roadrunner goalkeeper Hollee Hercik made a diving save on, while UH keeper
Kennedy Justin made her lone save of the first half in the 37th minute.
The two teams went scoreless for the first 34 minutes of second-half action before Zamora stepped up and buried the game-winner with just over 11 minutes to play. After
Alice Davidson fired off a shot from the top of the box that was deflected by a Roadrunner defender, replay review was used to determine that CSUB (2-8-1, 0-1 Big West) committed a handball in the box, awarding the PK to Hawai'i.
UH played keep away and some solid defense from there, finishing off their first shutout of the season. Keeper
Kennedy Justin recorded her first career clean sheet, making a save on CSUB's only shot on goal as the Rainbow Wahine defense allowed just eight shot attempts, including only one in the second half.
Through two matches, Hawai'i sits tied atop the Big West standings with six points, matching UC Santa Barbara.
The Rainbow Wahine head back on the road to continue Big West play at CSUN Thursday at 4 p.m. HT.
