NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The Hawai'i women's soccer team used more late-game magic to extend its win streak to five, as
Tatum Porter struck in the 81st minute to lift UH to a 1-0 win at CSUN Thursday.
The Rainbow Wahine (7-6, 3-0 Big West) are off to a 3-0 start to conference play for the first time since 2019 and are the first Big West team since 2021 to win three straight to begin league play. UH's five-match winning streak also matches its longest since 2016.
After 80 scoreless minutes between the two sides, Porter broke through when she finished from just outside the top of the box off a pass from
Mia Foster to put UH ahead. The goal was Porter's first career game-winner and third overall of the season and gave the 'Bows their sixth win when tied or trailing at the half.
Porter's game-winner also marked the third time this year that Hawai'i has taken the lead with fewer than 10 minutes remaining and the fourth time that it has gone ahead in the 75th minute or later.
The two teams went scoreless over the first 45 minutes. UH out-shot the Matadors (3-9-1, 1-2-1 Big West), 8-5, in the first half with a handful of solid chances as
Amber Gilbert carried one up the field and put a shot frame in the 24th minute while
Brynn Mitchell fired off shots on goal in the first and 26th minutes.
The 'Bows narrowly avoided falling behind in the 35th minute when CSUN's Jordyn Cannister hit the crossbar from long range before fending off a second-chance attempt by Jackie Victorio.
Freshman goalkeeper
Kennedy Justin led UH to its second straight shutout, becoming the first Hawai'i keeper to post consecutive clean sheets since 2022 (Lauren Marquez). The Rainbow Wahine also held the Matadors to just nine shots – none on goal – making it three consecutive matches that UH has limited its opponent to fewer than 10 shot attempts.
The Rainbow Wahine return home to host Cal State Fullerton in a battle of two of the top three teams in the Big West standings Sunday at 4 p.m. at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
