HONOLULU—University of Hawai'i men's tennis head coach Hendrik Bode announced the addition of former UCLA Bruin, Azuma Visaya to the 2024-25 Rainbow Warrior roster. It marks a return to the Islands for Visaya who was born and raised in Honolulu. Visaya has two years of eligibility left at UH.
Over the past two years at UCLA, Visaya has compiled an 18-11 overall singles record (8-4 in dual matches) primarily playing at No. 4 in the lineup. Last season, he clinched the win over LMU with a straight-set victory on the No. 6 court. As a freshman, posted a team-high tying three match-clinching points—including a clutch 6-1, 6-7 (4), 6-1 winner-take-all result to defeat Arizona State. He reached the third round of the ITA Southwest Regional. In the classroom, Visaya earned a spot on the UCLA Athletic Director's Honor Roll three of four semesters.
Prior to matriculating to UCLA, Visaya left Hawai'i as a teenager to train in California then moved to Florida to attend the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. and Hibernian Private School in Fort Meyers, Fla.. He came out of high school tabbed as a "Blue Chip" recruit according to Tennis Recruiting.net. In 2019, he had reached a ranking as high as No. 10 nationally. He was ranked No. 1 in the state of Hawai'i by TennisRecruiting.net. During his prep career, he rose to a career-high ITF junior ranking of 74 (No. 13 in the United States). The highly touted Visaya won multiple titles not only in Hawai'i, but on the mainland and abroad.
