BOSTON – The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine sailing team finished up its first day of competition at the 2024 ICSA Women's National Championship in 15th place in the Western Semifinals.

A total of 36 schools, divided into two 18-team fleets, competed in their designated Eastern and Western semifinal pools. The Rainbow Wahine were greeted with beautiful 60 degree weather and winds of 5-8 knots out of the southeast. With optimal conditions, a total of 24 races - 12 in each the A and B divisions - were completed on the first day alone.

The Rainbow Wahine face a tall task in making the nine-team cut to advance to the finals. UH has 327 total points, 120 points out from the current occupier of ninth place in Tulane which has 207 points. Twelve more semifinal races are expected to be completed tomorrow, weather permitting.

Sailing for the Rainbows were Mercy Tangredi, Martha Schuessler, and Morgan Carew in the A Division while Vivian Bonsager, Anna Kalabukhova and Peyton Lieser competed in the B division.  The A team finished with 174 points after one day of sailing, placing 16th place in its division. The B team, meanwhile,  tallied 153 points, good for 14th in its division and finished strong with a fourth-place showing in the final race of the day.
