LEADING OFF
DID YOU KNOW?
The Rainbow Warriors secured a series win at UC Davis with back-to-back extra inning victories Saturday and Sunday. The two extra inning wins marked the first time since 2010 that UH has won back-to-back games in extra frames.
SECOND HALF SURGES
Hawai'i has come on strong down the stretch of each of the first two seasons under head coach
Rich Hill. The 'Bows are 40-22 in April and May under Hill, going 20-10 in 2022 and 17-11 in 2023. UH is also hitting .297 while averaging 6.8 runs per game in games in the final two months of the year while averaging 8.55 strikeouts per nine innings with a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 522-227 (2.30).
WALK IT OUT
The Rainbow Warriors have shown some high-level plate discipline over the first half of the season, drawing 202 walks to rank 10th nationally and lead the Big West by a wide margin. Hawai'i has worked an average of 7.0 walks per game while also getting hit by a pitch 45 times for a total of 247 free passes.
Ben Zeigler-Namoa leads the conference lead with 27 walks with
Matthew Miura right behind in second with 26.
Austin Machado is third in the Big West with 25 walks while
Elijah Ickes is fifth with 24.
UH has also walked 19 more times than it has struck out this year, making the 'Bows one of only two teams in the country with more bases on balls than strikeouts.
SETTING THE TABLE
UH leadoff batter and shortstop
Jordan Donahue is on pace for a career year in 2024, leading the team and sitting in fourth in the conference with a .406 batting average. He also ranks sixth in the conference in on-base percentage (.492) and seventh in OPS (1.030) and leads the team with 14 multi-hit games. Donahue has hit safely in the last 12 games, hitting .418 (23-for-55) with six doubles and 13 runs scored in that stretch. He has led off the game with a base hit in each of the last six.
TROPICAL SWARM
The Hawai'i pitching staff has shown off its depth so far in 2024, using a deep pool of arms to rank among the nation's leaders in a number of categories. The Rainbow Warriors currently sit in the top 30 nationally in walks per nine innings (8th), strikeout-to-walk ratio (15th) and WHIP (26th). UH also ranks in the top three of the Big West in all of those categories. The 'Bows have also shown that they can turn to a number of different arms to get outs, as 12 pitchers have appeared in at least six games.
