BeachBows Beat Houston Christian, Fall To No. 5 TCU

FORT WORTH, Texas — The No. 11 University of Hawai'i beach volleyball wrapped up the TCU Invitational with a pair of matches on Saturday. The Rainbow Wahine took care of Houston Christian, 4-1, before succumbing to No. 5 TCU for the second straight day, this time by a 4-1 count. By going 2-2 over the weekend, the BeachBows moved to 16-11 overall for the season.

UH began the day with its first-ever meeting against Houston Christian (8-20). The BeachBows took care of business against the Huskies with a shuffled lineup. The 'Bows trotted out two new pairings when Kaylee Glagau and Pani Napoleon teamed up on Court 2 for a three-set win over HCU's Rachel Heilbrun and Kristin Gilmour. Meanwhile, Amirah Ali and Caprice Lorenzo made their debut as a pair at Court 3, but were not  as successful, dropping a three-setter to Paige Palmer and Audrey Pearce to surrender the team's lone point of the dual. Still with dominating wins on the other three courts, UH breezed to the victory.

UH concluded the tourney with a rematch with host TCU. The Horned Frogs escaped with a close 3-2 decision on Friday, rallying from a 2-0 deficit. In its penultimate home game of the year, TCU again got by a UH squad which again sported a retooled  lineup that featured the promotions of two pairs  and another two pairs that were playing in their first day together.

Anna Maidment and Sydney Miller moved up a spot to the No. 4 position and continued their winning ways with a straight set victory over Anete Namike and Hallie Corinne Frist to give UH the first point of the dual.  It capped a perfect 4-0 weekend for Maidment and Miller, the only UH pair to finish the tournament undefeated. The duo is now a stellar 17-4 on season and have won nine of their last 11 matches.

Sarah Burton and Julia Thelle were inserted at the No. 5 pair and battled hard before falling in three sets. Meanwhile, UH's hottest pair of Sydney Amiatu and Riley Wagoner played at No. 3, but fell to Morgan Willams and Tara Patton in straight sets. It was just the second loss in the last 10 matches and just the third in the last 15 for the UH duo.

TCU clinched the dual at the No. 2 court with a straight set win by Ana Vergara and Anhelina Khmil over Glagau and Napoleon. The top flight went the distance with Sutton MacTavish and Hailey Hamlett outlasting Jaime Santer and Alana Embry 21-14, 16-21, 15-9.

TCU improved to 22-5 overall on the season while picking up their fourth straight win in its series against the Rainbow Wahine. UH had won the first five meetings dating back to 2015.

After playing its last 16 matches on the mainland, the Rainbow Wahine now return to the island to host their final home matches of the season during Senior Weekend, April 13-14, at the Ching Courts. UH will face Chaminade, Portland and nationally-ranked Grand Canyon over the course of two-days, capped by a televised match versus GCU on Sunday, April 14 at 6:30 p.m. on Senior Night.
