Last Meeting: Feb. 28, 2024 at
Hawai'i Hilo (UH won, 15-2)
LEADING OFF
DID YOU KNOW?
Matthew Miura leads the team with 15 stolen bases and 35 RBIs. He is first UH player since 2011 and only the third since 2002 to have at least 15 stolen bases and 30 RBIs in a season, joining only Kolten Wong (2010, 2011) and Matt Inouye (2006).
LATE INNING MAGIC
The Rainbow Warriors have delivered in some clutch moments late in games this year. The 'Bows have won eight games in the eighth inning or later this season with five of those coming in extra innings and three of those being walk-offs. Seven different players have come through with the go-ahead RBI in those games while UH has won six times when tied or trailing after eight innings.
A SAN DIEGO SWEEP
Hawai'i is coming off of a huge weekend at UC San Diego, sweeping the Tritons to move back to .500 in Big West play. The Rainbow Warriors won a 4-3, 10-inning game on Friday before busting out the bats over the weekend, winning 14-6 on Saturday before securing the sweep with a 15-10 victory Sunday. UH hit .348 as a team during the series while belting four homers as the 'Bows improved to 6-0 all-time at UCSD.
WALK IT OUT
The Rainbow Warriors have shown some high-level plate discipline throughout the season, drawing 251 walks to rank 18th nationally and lead the Big West by a wide margin. Hawai'i has worked an average of 6.3 walks per game while also getting hit by a pitch 56 times for a total of 307 free passes.
Matthew Miura is third in the conference with 34 walks followed by
Elijah Ickes in fifth with 32 and
Ben Zeigler-Namoa in sixth with 31 while
Austin Machado is eighth with 30 bases on balls.
TROPICAL SWARM
The Hawai'i pitching staff has shown off its depth so far in 2024, using a deep pool of arms to rank among the nation's leaders in a number of categories. The Rainbow Warriors currently sit in the top 25 nationally in walks per nine innings (12th), strikeout-to-walk ratio (18th) and WHIP (25th). UH also ranks in the top four of the Big West in all of those categories. The 'Bows have also shown that they can turn to a number of different arms to get outs, as 11 pitchers have appeared in at least 10 games and 11 different pitchers have earned a win and seven have gotten a save.
