Baseball Wins in Extras Again to Open Series at UCSD

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The Hawai'i baseball team pulled out a win in another thriller, winning 4-3 in 10 innings to open the series at UC San Diego for its third straight win in extra innings.

Dallas Duarte delivered the go-ahead RBI single in the 10th inning while five UH pitchers combined to strike out 10 batters and hold the Tritons to three runs on six hits while walking just three.

Sean Rimmer led off the 10th tinning with an infield base hit and moved all the way to third on an errant throw by the UCSD pitcher attempting to double him off at first on a popped up bunt. Duarte then followed one batter later and lined a base hit through the drawn-in infield to score Jared Quandt, who pinch-ran for Rimmer.

Danny Veloz then entered in the bottom of the 10th and set down the Tritons on just eight pitches with the help of an incredible diving play by Stone Miyao to record the second out.

Sebastian Gonzalez got his first career start on the mound and delivered a solid effort, going five innings and striking out five while allowing two earned runs on four hits. Alex Giroux then shut the Tritons out over the next three innings before being lifted for Connor Harrison in the ninth. Harrison got the first out of the frame before Brayden Marx got the final two to send it to extras.

The Tritons got the scoring started in the second with a two-out, two-run double but the 'Bows came right back with three in the third to take the lead.

After the first run of the frame came home on an Austin Machado RBI fielder's choice, Dallas Duarte gave UH the lead with a two-run triple. Duarte lined one into center field that got past the Triton center fielder and allowed Machado and Kyson Donahue to score, but Duarte was thrown out trying to stretch the triple into an inside-the-park-homer.

UCSD tied it up at three in the sixth, where it would stay until Duarte's big hit in the 10th.

The 'Bows and Tritons continue their three-game series Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. HT.
