2023 Football Season Review

Team Trophy

SEASON HIGHLIGHTS

  • The 2023 season marked the second for head coach Timmy Chang. The former record-breaking UH quarterback led the Rainbow Warriors to a 5-8 mark, including 3-5 in the Mountain West.

 

  • Hawai‘i won three of its final four games of the season.

 

  • UH placed six members on the Mountain West’s all-conference teams, including WR Steven McBride, who was named to the second team. WR Pofele Ashlock, DB Peter Manuma, QB Brayden Schager, PK Matthew Shipley, and DB Cam Stone earned honorable mention.

 

  • WR Pofele Ashlock was named to the Football Writers Association of America Freshman
    All-America team as well as to The Athletic’s Freshman All-America second-team.

 

  • UH regained possession of the Kuter Trophy for the first time since 2016 following a 27-13 win over Air Force, Nov. 11 in Honolulu. Hawai‘i played all four of its rivalry trophy games in 2023 marking the first time in program history the team played all four in the same season.

 

  • WR Pofele Ashlock led all FBS freshmen in receptions (83), was No. 2 in receiving yards (832), and No. 3 in TD receptions (9) and receiving yards per game (64.0). He was the first UH freshman in the school’s Division I era to start a career with back-to-back 100-yard receiving games.

 

  • QB Brayden Schager led the Mountain West in passing yards (3,542), passing touchdowns (26), and points responsible for (168) and ranked No. 2 in total offense (277.3 ypg). Schager, who finished with six 300+ yard passing games, moved up the school’s all-time list to No. 5 in passing yards (6,505), No. 6 in total offense (6,565), and No. 7 in passing TDs (41).

 

  • UH closed out the season with a frenetic, walk-off victory over Colorado State, Nov. 25 in Honolulu. PK Matthew Shipley kicked the game-winning 51-yard field goal as time expired in a 27-24 victory. The 51-yarder was a career-long and his second game-winner of the season after booting a 24-yard field goal as time expired in a 20-17 win over New Mexico State.

 

  • WR Steven McBride finished the season with a team-best 1,024 receiving yards which marked the 24th 1,000-yard season in UH history and the first by a Rainbow Warrior since 2019.

 

  • Former UH receiver Chad Owens was among the Class of 2024 of the Canadian Football League Hall of Fame. Owens is the third former Rainbow Warrior in the CFL Hall of Fame joining offensive lineman Jim Mills (2009) and linebacker Solomon Elimimian (2023).
