HONOLULU — The No. 12 University of Hawai'i beach volleyball team wrapped up round-robin play in the Heineken Queen's Cup with a pair of 5-0 sweeps over Saint Mary's and Pepperdine Friday at Queen's Beach. The Rainbow Wahine finished the first two days of the tournament with an unblemished mark to improve to 4-5 on the season.
UH will be the No. 1 seed in Saturday's championship bracket and will play in the semifinals at 12:45 p.m. against the winner of the Pepperdine-Nebraska quarterfinal match earlier in the day. Saint Mary's earned the No. 2 seed and the other automatic spot in the semifinals. The championship match is slated for 4:30 p.m.
UH got off to a strong start in its opening match against Saint Mary's. The Rainbow Wahine claimed the first set on each of the five courts. UH took a quick 2-0 dual match lead with a pair of straight sets decisions, including a convincing 21-18, 21-11 victory by
Anna Maidment and
Sydney Miller over Nya Crump and Paola Peralta at the No. 5 flight. The Gaels rallied to force a third set on the three other courts. But UH squelched the Gaels on all three, highlighted by 15-5 third-set scores by
Jaime Santer and
Alana Embry on Court 1 and
Sydney Amiatua and
Riley Wagoner on Court 4. UH improved to a perfect 8-0 all-time versus Saint Mary's.
In the second match of the day, UH met up with long-time beach rival Pepperdine for the first time in five years. The result was UH's first-ever sweep of the Waves in 16 all-time meetings. It wasn't an easy sweep, however, as three of the courts went the distance. UH took the first point in an impressive fashion when
Kaylee Glagau and
Julia Thelle trounced Madison Oriskovich and Kristine Briede 21-16, 21-12 at Court 2. Wagner and Amiatu also enjoyed a straight set win on Court 4 to put the 'Bows up 2-0. The final three courts went to a third and deciding set with the 'Bows finishing off the Waves on each of them, capping the sweep when Santer and Embry rallied for a 15-21, 24-22, 15-7 win over McKenna Thomas and Kate Clermont at the top flight.
The final day of the Heineken Queens Cup will start off at 9 a.m. tomorrow with a quarterfinal match between Chaminade and Boise State in the first of seven matches, culminating with the championship match at 4:30 p.m.
