Men’s Golf Heads to the Desert For Cowboy Classic

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team will enter the final month of the regular season by competing in the Wyoming Cowboy Classic, Monday, April 1 and Tuesday, April 2 at the Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Ariz.

The tournament is the first of two tune-ups for the Big West Championship later this month in La Quinta, Calif.

The Cowboy Classic is tournament No. 8 for the Rainbow Warriors this season, who are looking to regain their form from the fall season when the team set program scoring records for single-round, 36-holes, and 54-holes. In four fall tournaments, UH averaged 286.83 strokes per round compared to a 291.11 average in three spring events.

Participants will play a total of 54 holes, 36 on Monday and 18 on Tuesday, at the 7,546-yard, par-72 course. Sprawled across more than 320 acres, the Fred Couples and Schmidt-Curley-designed golf course was listed among Golfweek's "Top 100 Resort Courses."

The tournament features a 21-team field highlighted by Top 50 programs UNLV and Long Beach State. In addition to UH and LBSU, other Big West teams competing are UC Davis, UC Irvine, Cal State Fullerton, and CSUN.

UH will send a contingent of Blaze Akana, Kolbe Irei, Josh Hayashida, Dane Watanabe, and Anson Cabello. Akana leads the team with a 71.38 scoring average, competing in all seven tournaments. Irei and Watanabe have also competed in every event this season and sports averages of 72.67 and 74.62, respectively.

Following the Cowboy Classic, UH will compete in the Western Intercollegiate, April 15-17 in Santa Cruz, Calif. Hawai'i is an annual participant in the tournament which is televised nationally on the Golf Channel.
