HONOLULU — The third-ranked University of Hawai'i water polo team earned a 12-4 victory over No. 25 CSUN on Saturday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex to complete a sweep of its weekend lste in Big West play.
A 4-0 scoring run to start the match led the Rainbow Wahine (15-3, 3-0 Big West) to a commanding victory against the Matadors (16-12, 0-3). UH earned its 12th victory over a CWPA top-25 opponent and remained undefeated in Big West play.
Four Rainbow Wahine scored at least two goals to continue this weekend's offensive barrage. Freshman Daisy Logtens got the start in goal and recorded seven saves through three quarters of action and Emma Gurasich closed out the match. The duo allowed just four goals on 26 CSUN shots.
Sophomore Bia Mantellato Dias got the 'Bows off to another quick start netting two goals in the first 1:49 of play. Bernadette Doyle tacked on a goal and Alba Bonamusa Boix scored on a power play opportunity with 33 seconds in the quarter to extend the UH lead to 4-0 after the first period.
The Rainbow Wahine opened the scoring in the second quarter with a goal from Jordan Wedderburn. CSUN responded with their first goal of the game, but UH answered back with a 3-0 scoring run. Agatha Weston and Doyle answered on UH power plays and Lot Stertefeld scored off a feed from Roni Perlman to push UH's lead to 8-1. CSUN scored with 2:03 left in the half but Logtens came up a block at the buzzer to send UH into the break with an 8-2 lead.
Bonamusa Boix converted on another power play opportunity to begin the second half to earn her second goal of the match. CSUN netted a single goal in the quarter and the 'Bows held on to their six-point advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
UH added to their lead in the fourth with goals from Lucia Gomez de la Puente, Esmee Roijen and Wedderburn to secure the win over the Matadors.
The Rainbow Wahine wrap up their four-game homestand with a matchup against UC San Diego at 6 p.m., March 29 at the DKAC.
