Game Recap: Women's Water Polo |

No. 2 Rainbow Wahine Defeat UC San Diego to Sweep Homestand

HONOLULU — The second-ranked University of Hawai'i women's water polo team completed a sweep of its four-game homestand with an 18-8 victory over No. 12 UC San Diego on Friday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
 
UH sophomore Bia Mantellato Dias matched her season high with five goals for a third time this season. Bernadette Doyle and Alba Bonamusa Boix scored three each and the Rainbow Wahine improved to 16-3 overall and 4-0 in Big West play. 
 
UH won its third straight game by a double-digit margin while UC San Diego (14-9, 2-1) had a seven-game winning streak stopped and took its first conference loss. 
 
UH freshman Daisy Logtens started in goal and stopped 12 shots through three quarters. Emma Gurasich closed out the game and had three saves in the fourth period.
 
Mantellato Dias and Morgan Rios scored on UH's first two possessions while Logtens blocked UCSD's first two shots and Doyle came up with a steal. After a shot was blocked, Bonamusa Boix retrieved the rebound and Mantellato Dias scored her second goal to give UH a 3-0 lead.
 
Roni Perlman answered UCSD's first goal and Lucia Gomez de la Puente pounded in a goal to push UH's lead to 5-2 late in the first quarter.
 
UH opened the second quarter with a 4-0 run and stretched the lead to 9-2 lead when Doyle scored off a feed from Alia Burlock. Mantellato Dias knocked in her fourth goal with 13 seconds left in the quarter to give the 'Bows a 10-3 lead after one half of play.
 
Bonamusa Boix scored on a power-play opportunity to open second half action, followed by Mantellato Dias' fifth goal of the match. The teams traded goals with Doyle and Bonamusa Boix earning hat tricks to end the quarter and UH entered the fourth with a 14-5 lead.
 
Four different Rainbow Wahine scored in the fourth quarter to secure the victory and extend the win streak to four. UH outscored its opponents 59-24 during the four-game homestand.
 
UH continues Big West play taking on UC Irvine on Friday, April 5 at 7 p.m. Pacific Time (4 p.m. Hawai'i Time) in Irvine, Calif. The 'Bows conclude their regular-season road schedule against Long Beach State on Sunday, April 7 at 12 p.m. PT (9 a.m. HT) in Long Beach, Calif.
